KATE: Story For DMN

Postby ponydawg » Sun Jul 11, 2010 8:08 pm

Kate,

I hope this thread finds you well.
I understand the majority of Dallas isn't really enthused about SMU football.
But there is a good story here for the masses. People love to read about money and deceit. The "Circle of Champions" is filled with very well known families and businessmen connected to the Dallas/Texas area. If these "elitist" were misled (lied, deceived) into giving 500k each to pay for June's salary by SMU....there is a good story there. Each of these members are very smart businessmen and are rich for a reason. While they have the money, I can't imagine they would just throw it away. And hiring June, knowing the Administration was going to handcuff him would be the definition of throwing your money away. Turner claimed that we were on a level playing field. June was quoted by the DMN saying "My understanding is that – I've only been here two-and-a-half months – we were able to get the players we needed and wanted. My understanding is it has been on a level playing field the last four or five years. Prior to that, it was an issue for the coaches. If you're an NCAA qualifier and we want you, you can come to school here." I assume he and the circle of champions were told this by someone. Everyone wants to read about deceit and money, and at the bottom of this story, that is what is there.

con artist - a swindler who exploits the confidence of his victim. a person who swindles you by means of deception or fraud

SMU admission process limits judgment calls for borderline athletes

12:12 AM CDT on Monday, July 12, 2010

Kate Hairopoulos

Simply achieving NCAA qualifying standards does not guarantee admission to SMU, which was ranked 68th in the 2010 U.S. News and World Report's rankings of colleges.

Any prospective student-athlete who has an SAT score below 900 or a grade point average under 2.5 as determined by SMU is sent to a five-person faculty subcommittee for a closer look.

Those standards were implemented Feb. 15, 2009, to more tightly define standards and require fewer judgment calls, associate provost Tom Tunks said.

Coaches, along with Dave Wollman, SMU's track coach and liaison between athletics and admissions, present their cases. Subcommittee members must determine if the student has at least a 50 percent chance of graduating from SMU. If so, they should admit that student.

If the subcommittee denies admission, an appeal can be made, provided that it involves new information.

If the student-athlete is still rejected, athletic director Steve Orsini can appeal to the Dean of Undergraduate Admissions, who has the final say. That is what happened in the case of prospective freshmen Jeremy Hall and Darryl Jackson, resulting in SMU's offer to admit them in January if they acquire sufficient credits elsewhere.

Does any other university have such a panel to judge qualifiers?

I responded on the longer better thread about this article. 2.5 GPA and 900 SAT are just the group that they look at more closely-and the vast majority of those 17+ in 2010 (maybe more as I explained) marginal recruits are getting in and in much higher numbers than under previous coaching staffs. Compare to Phil Bennett who had 3.5 per year submitted in 2006 and 2007 who were approved.
