I think the difference is Michigan, UAB, UCF, and Virginie Tech will not have admissions denials used against them in recruiting. That will only happen to SMU.

gee whiz, the kid must have been Forrest Gump material to not get into South Carolina. They admit missing links there.

This is making me madder and madder at the DMN over this "story". You mean to tell me that in just one afternoon we've been able to dig up similar admission denials from USF, Va. Tech., Michigan, South Carolina, and UAB? Really hard to say that any of those schools aren't "football-friendly".

And for the past 2 weeks we've had to endure one sky is falling thread on this board after another. Hell, if some of the people on this board had their way, SMU would be engaged in a full-blown search for a new President, Provost, AND Dean of Admissions right now!

So, because it happens at other schools, it's OK that it happens at SMU?

Try having this happen to a young man you know personally and see how many cute comments you feel like making.

USC changed its special admissions process for athletes three years ago after Gamec*cks coach Steve Spurrier ripped the administration when two signees who were NCAA qualifiers were denied admission days before preseason drills began.

Although NCAA qualification still does not guarantee recruits admission, the changes were to have streamlined the process so recruits on the academic bubble would not be left in limbo late into the summer.

I think everyone agrees that the late notice was a bad deal because it didn't allow these kids a chance to get into another Div 1 school and football program for this fall. You may know all the details, but we don't and for that reason, most of us have stayed away from making any judgements regarding the kids. A number of years back when Cavan was coach, I managed to get my nephew a preferred walk on invitation based on films of his football highlights. Now he was a good kid and not dumb by any stretch of the imagination...but he could not pass algebra 2 to save his life despite multiple attempts. Needless to say, he did not get accepted into SMU. It's not fun, but it happens. It sounds like there are other options out there for these two kids and I wish them the very best.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

I'd bet an inch of smupony94's Talley-Wacker just about all these kids would have been considered "partial qualifiers" under the old rules and many schools just aren't willing to go along with the bottom-less pit of the new standards especially with regard to tthe SAT. Again I'd be concerned if SMU was denying admission to qualified kids scoring at or near 700 SAT. I'd have rapidly waning concern if they scored below a 700 SAT. I never thought SMU should sign partial qualifiers under the old rules either.

If anyone wants to PM, I'll be glad to tell you the whole story and I'm sorry for your nephew's experience.

I don't know whether or not Jeremy would have succeeded academically at SMU - but I do know he did everything the SMU coaches told him to do. And those same coaches told him, after looking at his final transcript, there should be no problem with his admission.

In spite of all that's happened, I'm hopeful and excited about SMU's season and plan to attend as many games as possible. However, I don't see anything funny about the situation.

Neither do I. I was being very serious in my post. Note that I did not say I didn't feel bad for Mr. Hall and Mr. Jackson. Nor did I say that I liked the way it was handled from a timing standpoint. Don't imply that I was being "cute". . .that was not my intent.

And I apologize because my 'cute' reference was toward ponyte - he seems to think this is all pretty funny.. I should have made that clear.
