Re: Could it be as simple as jealousy?Wow, they get out of school early. Our schools just released transcripts here in Virginia a week ago.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: Could it be as simple as jealousy?most schools in the dallas area held graduation around may 24.
Re: Could it be as simple as jealousy? It's not jealousy. It's not even Turner - it's Tunks and his admissions committee. Turner just doesn't have the BOT's support in overruling them (nor the spine to, IMO).
From what I've seen of Turner, he takes a hands-off approach to handling things like this.
Re: Could it be as simple as jealousy? It is called delegating authority. It is what CEO's do. There is no way that a top executive can be directly involved in every decision that is made on a daily, weekly, monthly basis. To do otherwise would be micro-managing. The board sets broad policy...the President sees that it is done by setting more detailed policy and directives...those under him make it happen in accordance with there responsibilities authority. SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: Could it be as simple as jealousy?
It is apparent that the policy and directive submitted to the academic committee and the athletic department are either different, or their understanding of the same directive to both parties is different. Either way this is an issue that needs micro-managing by Dr. Turner so we never encounter this problem again. SMU - IT'S YOUR TURN

Re: Could it be as simple as jealousy? It is not Turner's responsibility to tell us, the great unwashed, every little executive thing he does, but...do you really think Tunks stepping down is just a coincidence? We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: Could it be as simple as jealousy?
Perhaps; it appears from the link that this move was in the works before we all started be_atching. Either way admissions and athletics need to know all the parameters for admission so we never see this problem again! SMU - IT'S YOUR TURN

Re: Could it be as simple as jealousy?
Being a glorified fundraiser is actually the #1 job of any university president. The Provost or Chancellor run the day to day operations of any college. The President creates over arching goals that the Provost or Chancellor have to meet. After creating those goals, he hops in his car and begs for money from people that had the brains not to be academics. He tells them about his wonderful goals and how he needs their money to make them happen - he is like a boss anywhere, he talks about doing the job, but doesn't actually do it. Outside the faculty dining room/club nobody from the admissions committee has ever seem Turner. You want to know who is in charge of this debacle - The Chancellor or Provost. Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall
Re: Could it be as simple as jealousy? Is three the final count of football players with late rejections by the admissions people? Two scholarship and one walk-on?
I know that college applicants sometimes get put on a waiting list. In effect that is what happened to the three athletes. It would be interesting to know how many late rejections of applicants in the freshman class as a whole there were. If there were thirty or fifty altogether who had their bags packed only to receive a "NO" letter then the plight of the athletes is a little more understandable. But what ever the number might be it is a shabby way to treat people no matter their reason for interest in SMU. And if there were only three? Well, others have said already something needs changing.
Re: Could it be as simple as jealousy?
Meadows. The only thing scarier would be if he were in Dedman. Not exactly a traditional football-backing school. disclaimer: Yes, I realize that many very dedicated fans of SMU athletics have passed through Meadows. "I think Couchem is right."

Re: Could it be as simple as jealousy? He's gone from that position now. He's taking Ellen Pryor's duties for a semester, then taking a leave of absence for a year before he'll return to teaching (not to the Provost office).
We had better hope that whoever takes Tunks' former duties is pro-athletics.
Re: Could it be as simple as jealousy?
Don't these guys ever get "real jobs" & get fired? They just recycle themselves through the whole infested system. Looking at his resume on the website he's like a government bureaucrat! BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Re: Could it be as simple as jealousy?is Paul Rogers still around? had him for a few classes in law school, including a sports law class, and believed he served as counsel to SMU w/r/t athletics. he is a huge football supporter...can we get him involved??
