Observer: "... Otherwise, why is Jones putting off signing his new contract?"

WHOA BABY!!! WE REALLY DO HAVE PROBLEMS HERE!

Hall, a cornerback from Brenham who will now play baseball at UT-San Antonio, was also an NCAA qualifier that SMU ultimately rejected. And it took offensive lineman Ben Gottschalk—who was accepted by Ivy League member Penn, for crying out loud—two appeals to earn admission on the Hilltop.

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE!!!! GOTTSCHALK NEEDED TWO APPEALS & PENN TAKES HIM JUST LIKE THAT???!!!

THIS IS PYE ALL OVER AGAIN!!!

BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Couple interesting parts...

"I don't sense any friction, and if there was any I'd pick up on it," says Tunks, who has overseen the school's undergraduate admissions since 1998. "Things are fine. I don't think there are any problems at all. We are really unified here."

(Is he blind???)

-and-

In limbo for three days while scrambling for another school, Jackson was surprised when Turner asked to meet with him. According to Jackson, Turner back-tracked and described him as "an exception," urging him to attend one semester at a local junior college to assure being welcomed back to SMU.

Jackson's response after being discarded in the clusterf***? He plans to enroll at UCLA.

(Turner must have been trying to do damage control after the backlash without making the committee look weak. He was praying that Jackson would take the compromise, get him into school in January, and he wouldn't have to take a stand against the panel. Really, what difference would one semester at Richland College have done to prove that he could pass at SMU?)

This article is the real truth of what is happening behind closed doors.

"June and his staff aren't getting the support they were promised," says a source within the SMU athletic department. "There's a lot of head-butting taking place."

Jones desperately wants to comfortably coexist with SMU's administration, and if part of that process requires him to temporarily swallow his pride and camouflage the truth via a warm-n-fuzzy statement, then so be it. But so disillusioned is Jones that he has yet to sign a contract extension offered to him last November. That extension, presented near the end of SMU's first successful season since 1984, was trumpeted in a press release indicating Jones would remain the Mustangs' head coach through 2014. But Jones not only has refused to sign the extension, he has also privately expressed doubt this summer about remaining on the Hilltop for the remainder of his initial five-year, $10 million deal.

So, what was the reason JJ didn't sign the extension in November? The two recruits weren't an issue yet. Can some insider shed some light? There is something going on here.

Participate to Appreciate.

I'm so upset about this. These three young men have been shut out and will never have the pride of holding a SMU diploma.

Give the guys a chance... then if they do not cut the mustard... let them go, but at least we gave them the chance for a GREAT education.

a lot of people on this board know that the Observer article drips with truth. There's almost nothing left to say other than sit back and watch, and hope someone can pull this thing out of the ditch. Good job, SMU!

If Turner has the nerve to speak at the kickoff luncheon, we should BOO so

long and loud that he gives up and walks away.

interesting. it all sounds pretty bleak.
it's curious that the thread with the poll of how long before JJ leaves SMU seems to have disappeared. It might be a bit more apropos now, if the behind-the-scenes tension described is true.

Nice job with the pseudo-Stallion in the Comment section.

Too bad the article failed to answer the question we wanted to know. What is the profile of those few being denied admission. If Jones wants support he should make his position more transparent concerning the type of player denied admission.

Article failed to point out the 6 non-qualifiers last year and the apparent soon to be-and I'm speculating 5-6 non-qualifiers this year

Tunks is stepping down to return to teaching. I do not believe that is a coincidence. While he attempts to claim all is well, his actions tell the story of a man that failed to the point that he was forced to resign.

What's your point? JJ's not complaining that these guys should have been admitted.

I've been trying to tell you guys this for a week now, and this story doesn't even hit all of the lowdown crap on Turner. Still think this is a "molhill"? June and his staff, have been fighting Turner from the beginning.
