Can someone please explain the admissions problem?

Postby StingStang » Thu Jul 15, 2010 1:08 pm

I read Richie Whitt's article in the Observer. It seems the minimum SMU standard is 900 SAT and 2.5 GPA. Anyone falling below that has to be given an exception / go through a review. Since June has been here, the article states that 25 of 27 such players have been admitted. I don't really see what the big problem is.

The main thing is that we shouldn't be offering scholarships to SA's who have not yet been cleared. That in itself will avoid the black eye. It's not the standards themselves, it's the application of the standards that needs improving.

And it's not like those admission standards are so lofty. In fact, they are only slightly stronger than the NCAA minimum sliding scale: http://www.ubathletics.buffalo.edu/comp ... gscale.pdf

On that scale, you're a minimum qualifier with a 2.3 GPA and a 900 SAT. Or a 2.5 GPA with a 820 SAT. SMU's standards are very, very close to that. Don't tell me SMU can't compete without letting in absolutely everybody under the sun - June already proved to you that's not true.

Presumably there is a problem somewhere; otherwise; June would have signed his extension.

Sounds logical, except when were these new standards adopted? When were they communicated? How were they communicated? Obviously the coaches weren't aware of these, the students weren't aware of these, nor were the financial supporters of the athletic program. The university made an error, never appologized and should have made a exception for these two NCCA qualifiers. For many of us, this is the "straw", not the "load" that has gotten us so worked up.

Though he did not mean it this way - I think that STALLION explained it well in his subject line below: Lunatics running the Asylum

In this case Admin and faculty = Lunatics and SMU = Asylum

Maybe June's holding out on the extension because he figures he can pull off another big season and then command more $$. Or maybe he's holding out to gain leverage on the admin. and the alumni by keeping alive the possibilty he could bolt. Really though, I don't think June is too far away from getting what he wants from SMU. Sounds like improved academic support is on the way. Doesn't sound like the admissions process needs a huge overhall, just a tweak here and there. Build the guy an indoor practice facility and I think he'll be pretty darn happy. If he's still grumbling then, I might just have to write him off as a serial complainer when viewed in the context of his experience at Hawaii and the Atlanta Falcons.

He did? Why is the Observer reporting that the extension is unsigned? If they got that wrong I would question the credibility of a lot of that story.

"I think was spring '09." not to trash you, but you're suggesting over a year ago and yet who was aware of this? Are you sure of this? SMU initiated new rules for the acceptance of athletes that is inconsitent with the NCAA rules? Had it been broadly known, there would have been an outcry a year ago. Certainly not a venemous as today.

June most definitely has not signed his extension--he agreed to it in principle, but, he has never signed it.

I have heard from 3 different credible persons who do not start baseless rumors that he has not.

Once more, June has not signed his extension. Even the DMN points out that he hasn't. He says he will, baring some legal issues, but he has not signed it.
