Only a year after he graduated, one of Walker's professors, Dorothy Kendall Bracken, wrote Doak Walker: 3-Time All-American, an "as told to" biography of her former student.

What are the odds of a professor at any university writing a positive biography about a college football player these days? Hard to comprehend.

Nice article thanks for posting.

Is that your magazine? If so, what's the story? Where'd you see him?

It is a good article, but buried in the middle of the first section of the paper and not the sports section. Its a part of a series celebrating 125 years of the DMN. Hopefully a lot of people will see it anyway.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Maybe some of the less rabid sports fans in the DFW area will learn that SMU has a football team.

a single player basically built interest in SMU football and lead to a search for more seating capacity for SMU home games. do you suppose we will someday reach a point where all 32k seats in Ford will be sold out every game?
sure would be nice to see "overflow" SRO seating in the south end zone...and we will not plan any fireworks if/when that day arrives

The College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Indiana exhibits a complete collection of original art portraits of all of the Heisman Trophy Winners in their Press Box area. Ted Watts' art work at its finest, the series was originally unveiled in August 1996 with the first 62 portraits.

The big picture looks more like Kyle Rote than Doak.

Doak Walker and especially Bobby Layne will get plenty 'love' if Matt Stafford can ever take the Lions to a Super Bowl.

Which leads to what I believe to be the greatest SMU trivia question ever (if, of course, it can be properly vetted here on PFs) .

In their illustrious histories, SMU and UT have only met twice when both teams were undefeated, in 1947 and in 1983. Besides that fact, what else do these 2 games have in common?

Answer - all 4 QBs, Doak Walker, Bobby Layne, Lance McIlhenny and Rob Moerschell were Highland Park graduates
