Re: The SMU Football Blog Speaks!Though we have progressed light years in the last few years, we have some problems in this area, no doubt. What I want to know is how does our procedure compare with our rivals? Is it still the case that we're relatively hard to get an athlete into? Is this really a material problem? Or is it the case, as Blog alludes, that June is privately ok with the process but will continue to press to make additional changes to continue to smooth this thing out? And is there a point at which we truly are wh0ring ourselves out? I'd personally rather give up ten spots in the rankings if it means protecting a degree of academic integrity. But that's just me.

Re: The SMU Football Blog Speaks!
Like the Jimmy Johnson/Jerry Jones relationship. Jimmy had a big ego but if Jerry would have stepped aside to let Jimmy be king of the football universe, he would have a dynasty over the past 15 years instead of pathetic mediocrity.
Re: The SMU Football Blog Speaks!
I completely agree that admitting students who fail to maintain academic eligibility is a Lose-Lose situation for both the student and the University. Someone has to make a reasonably informed decision if this is the case for each marginal qualifier. The "memo" at least provides our first actual insight into SMU's marginal qualifier policy, and the commitment to some needed changes is an important acknowledgment by the administration. BTW the "alleged" Penn (Ivy League) qualifier was not denied admission, but was evaluated by the committee before his acceptance. Any talk about SMU rejecting "Ivy" accepted student athletes is total bunk! SMU's past problems and the NCAA's increased vigilance as shown by USC's probation (as well as investigations at Florida, Alabama, North & South Carolina) for lack of Institutional Control obviously are playing a role as well. We have until June 9, 2014 to watch the effects of the scholarship losses on USC! SMU never wants to go there again. SMU - IT'S YOUR TURN

Re: The SMU Football Blog Speaks!Of course no one wants to go there again, but you can't manage you program for 23 years in "fear". Manage properly, but not defensively, sometime you just have to get back on that horse, er Mustang.
The penalty was a terrible thing, but sooner or later you can't make that an excuse for how everything is managed. For instance, this discussion is about admissions and admission policy. Assuming grades weren't changed (obviously not, or they would have been more than marginal) or SAT scores changed (see grades), the students qualified under NCAA guidelines otherwise they would be non-qualifiers and be required to pass two years of JC, as some other recruits have been forced to do. Admitting these qualifiers in no way be a violation of NCAA rules and regulations, but here were are discussing probation, penalties and warnings of USC's consequences. Why does the subject of "penalities" even arise? We are discussing the right of the university to establish higher guidelines, and properly communicate this to the university community, not violations.
Re: The SMU Football Blog Speaks!he was admitted to penn but had to go through two appeals to get into smu. i don't understand this at all.
Re: The SMU Football Blog Speaks!I just gotta say this is an excellent read on the situation by Blog. Bravo.
Re: The SMU Football Blog Speaks!and long overdue
Re: The SMU Football Blog Speaks!
Yes we are and I addressed this
However, the issue of the the first step toward Lack of Institutional Control as raised by Stallion
is probably a contributing factor in the admission's conundrum we are trying to decipher. Admissions and athletics both need to have a clear standard of what is the absolute minimum requirement for student-athletes to not only gain admittance, but also to remain academically eligible. That is really the issue that Dr. Turner needs to address. SMU - IT'S YOUR TURN

Re: The SMU Football Blog Speaks! It will be very interesting to see what information is gathered from similar & competing schools. I would assume due to proximity, status, long-term competition and the fact we compete for recruits, Baylor and TCU would have be a must in the comparison.
Accordingly, Associate Provost Tom Tunks will chair a special committee (the Athletics Admission Process Review Committee) composed of representatives from the Athletics Department and the academic sector who are involved with the admission of PSAs. This Committee will review thoroughly the current athletics admissions process to develop more effective official communication standards from the Athletics Department to prospective student athletes. In addition, the President of the Lettermen’s Association and the President of the Mustang Club have also agreed to serve. The Committee will meet with coaches and athletics administrators and gather comparison data from peer private universities, both local and national, as a part of this review. Its report and recommendations should be submitted to the Provost by September 1. In fact, I suspect JJ could tell you what the deal is at TCU. Patterson supposedly has a great deal of respect for JJ. As far as Briles...not sure. However, I can't imagine Briles having to face much in the way of obstacles with admission standards. He most recently came from cougar high. He coached at tech. Duh. If the Committee finds that we play by much more restrictive rules than our peers, does anything change? I am somewhat hopefull that the report from the Committee will open some eyes. I am also afraid I know what the other schools do and that SMU could dismiss the findings with an attitude of ...we're SMU (Harvard of the South) and ...(fill in the blanks with excuse). Will be very interesting to see how it shakes and out and very telling in how we react.
Re: The SMU Football Blog Speaks!harvard of the south my @ss...we are ranked 68 in the latest US News report...below TAMU, UT & Rice in the state of Texas alone. I've never understood why we put these self-imposed restrictions on ourselves w/r/t recruiting. SMU admin thinks we are so superior, yet i see no problem with other schools getting players in.
Re: The SMU Football Blog Speaks! And you would be correct on all counts.
Re: The SMU Football Blog Speaks!we were told at one time that we would use the same standards as ut. i have no idea what that means.
Re: The SMU Football Blog Speaks!UT's standards are higher than June Jones at SMU. UT doesn't recruit JUCOs or have 10-12 non-qualifiers in 2 years.
"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: The SMU Football Blog Speaks!
if that is the case, and since it is coming from you I do tend to rely on your statement, I am shocked. I would have thought that UT standards=NCAA qualifiers. And UT doesn't recruit Juco's b/c they HAVE NO NEED TO..they get the cream of HS crop. BUt I would think their HS recruits only need to qualify through clearinghouse...not higher standards. Correct me if i am wrong...as i am not familiar with UT's admissions policies. But if you are a Broker-Dealer in need help w/r/t securities laws, i am your man.
Re: The SMU Football Blog Speaks!
"For the four classes that entered from 1999-2002 — and in each case were given six years to graduate under NCAA guidelines — only 49 percent of Longhorns football players earned their degrees. None of the 25 schools listed in this week's BCS rankings, where Texas sits at No. 3, had a lower rate." http://www.statesman.com/sports/content ... rades.html Makes one wonder how much higher academic quality those UT football players really are, I think?
