Re: Too bad SMU:Methodists isnt like Baylor:BaptistsWhat does Baylor have to do with that story exactly? He's the coach at Butler.
Sir, shooting-star, sir.
Frosh 2005 (TEN YEARS AGO!?!) The original Heavy Metal.
Re: Too bad SMU:Methodists isnt like Baylor:Baptists
I may be reading his point wrong, but I think he's saying that if SMU:Methodists what Baylor:Baptists or ND:Catholics or BYU:Mormons (i.e. a university with a national following from those within its affiliated religion, where coaches who are devout followers of its affiliate religion want to coach), we might have a chance of landing Brad Stevens. I do disagree, though.
Re: Too bad SMU:Methodists isnt like Baylor:Baptistshey, thread needed a title. Some of them work well, some don't. I'll get with my copywriter and do better next time. Good article though.
There are a lot of reasons SMU wouldnt/couldnt ever land Stevens. Anyway, while I didnt (and won't) put a lot of research into the thread title, one could argue that Bronco Mendenhall is such an example. Also one of the reasons Lou Holtz left Minnesota for a moribund Notre Dame program to take over for Gerry Faust.
Re: Too bad SMU:Methodists isnt like Baylor:BaptistsI'm a Baptist, I have never followed Baylor. Only Baptists I know who follow Baylor went there. There are over 100 baptist universities and colleges in the US. Also Baptists are congregationalists. Baylor used to be affiliated with the Texas Baptists, but I think they parted ways.

Re: Too bad SMU:Methodists isnt like Baylor:Baptists
Although I am a Presbyterian, I do study other religions. If you are saying that Baptist practice a congregational type of church government, I believe you are correct. However there is a historic Congregational demomination, which is now manifest in the United Church of Christ and has nothing to do with Baptists.
Re: Too bad SMU:Methodists isnt like Baylor:BaptistsThe point is that being a "baptist" has nothing to do with whether a recruit goes to Baylor. Because no two baptist churches are alike, and because they may be affiliated with one or more national, state or local baptist associations, conventions, fellowships, or networks, it is very difficult to make that generalization. For example, Baylor comes from the Southern Baptist tradition. Many players you recruit come from the National Baptist tradition (white churches =Southern, black churches =National). Now that is changing as more and more black and northern baptist church and independent churches affiliate with the Southern Baptists. For example, Thomas Roads Baptist Church (long an independent church) and founded by Jerry Falwell, recently started a relationship with the Southern Baptist Convention. But, the fact is that kids will go where they want to go and where their parents feel comfortable with them attending. Deeply religious schools with rules appeal to moms much more than schools that have lax rules.

Re: Good read about HC at another small private schoolI'm sure he'll be on the radar if we're planning a change. It would be foolish if he wasn't. But then again, this is SMU.
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.
