Life after June Jones?

Postby mustang musashi » Sun Jul 25, 2010 11:01 pm

If at this point in time JJ decided to take his offensive knowledge elsewhere would SMU be able to survive and continue to progress and then eventually transgress what has already been put in place?

I ask this because it seems a bunch of Hawaii fans can't seem to be able to let JJ go, and moving on, and ultimately believing and having faith that Hawaii will again regain its status as one of the best mid majors in the nation, but without the man who got them there...

Good question.
(How's that "contract-signey" thing coming along? Must be an exceedingly complicated thing to read, even for lawyers. :) )

If we can retain our relaxed academic standards and a willingness to pay the next coach well, we'll be just fine and will be able to build on what he leaves. If the faculty regains control, we decide to go cheap on salaries and our leadership decides to minimize football's importance, we're back where we started in 3 years.

We also have one huge advantage over Hawaii in being in the midst of a large population center.

who cares? June Jones is at SMU. that is a fact, everything else is speculation. June knows he has it good here. great facilities, great AD, great recruiting area, big money, and a bright future. Living and working in HighlandPark/University Park isn't too bad, things could be worse. June is smart enough to realize no matter where he was to go there is no where that is perfect. life always has obstacles. if he leaves we'll have to deal with it. Yes it wouldn't look good if he up and left but with the kind of money we are now paying i am sure we could attract other outside talented people. and the longer June stays maybe one of his current staff could step up. we dont want June to leave, we need June, but any one of us could have a massive heart attack later today, but why always be worried about it?....if it happens deal with it! until then enjoy what you have.

Hawaii fans will get their wish... sort of.

From everything June has ever said, he's moving back to the islands, but to retire. Expect that in about 5 more years. Unless we can make him feel really welcome in Dallas, and then who knows, maybe we can keep him a little longer.

Hawai'i also has some big problems with their athletics, and it goes beyond the man on the sidelines. There just doesn't seem to be the support from students/community to build a consistent winner of a program. How soon they forget the good ol days.

Better to be ready for the unexpected than to be hit with a loss like that and be in complete shambles (which I fully expect SMU to be if June were to leave).

So we should "be ready"? What does that mean? We should start preparing
for June to leave before he starts his 3rd year? What do you propose specifically
we should be doing right now in preparation for June leaving?

make sure Klemm has everything he needs and loves Dallas so that he can be named HC in waiting in a couple of years

Pretty sure that June has made it clear that this is going to be his last job. He'll have enough pony money to retire comfortably in Hawaii

I don't understand all the talk about Klemm being the next HC. I mean, he's a great guy, stellar athlete, great playing credentials, killer recruiter ...... BUT, last year was his first year in coaching (the year before he was a volunteer) -- all opportunities JJ has provided to allow him to break into the business. He may well turn out to be a great HC someday, but it seems a bit early in his career to me. If watching the landscape of college/pro football has shown anything, one thing is that great athletes or great assistant coaches don't always make great HC's, hasn't it?
