SMU Head Coach Matt Doherty announced that Cotton Giles and Troy Alexander will join the Mustangs beginning with the 2010-11 season. Both Dallas area natives were rated among the top-20 prospects in the state by Texas Hoops in 2008, with Giles ranked 14th and Alexander 19th. Giles attended Kimball High School and then played two seasons at Nevada. Alexander attended Highland Park High School and then played two seasons at Santa Clara. Both will sit out the 2010-11 season due to NCAA transfer rules. http://smumustangs.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/072910aab.html

That's damn good for our ball handling down the road, not so much this year. Good to grab a few local kids, hopefully they can sway Gotcher or someone. SMU needs a profile local on the scene working it. Grass isn't always greener, fellas
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones

I love that we got 2 local kids. DFW is one of the best cities for HS b-bball. Let's hope they can produce.

I've been to 5 tourneys this July, and DFWs '11 class is as good as any in the country. The depth is impressive, as 30-40 kids in texas, actually have a shot at mid high through high major ball. Usually the dropoff is significant after the 15th kid or so in texas, not this year. Dallas Mustangs are just loaded. We need Cotton recruiting the area. He needs a running mate in the backcourt or at small forward. Someone who can fill it. Honestly, SMU has to grab a local or two in this class. It can be Austin Chatman or Trey Davis for all I care. So many ships to give and so much local talent. Package them up if it gets kids more excited.

Getting a couple of locals is good news. Its an upgrade in the talent level @ PG & we really need that for the future. This does take some of the pressure off the staff to land a PG. However, Chat would be nice. Really like the combo Gotcher & Jones @ Garland Lakeview. Still don't understand lack of interest in Groselle. Regardless, getting Giles & Alexander is a good start to hopefully a successful upcoming Fall signing period.
"We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Unfortunately, all our games are played indoors."

Are these two kids "good grabs" and/or problems that did not fit in elsewhere?????

I think these are two great kids, not problems at all. I would have liked both out of high school, particularly Giles and said so at the time when he was at Kimball. Its a little different to get them on the rebound as transfers though. They both left situations where they should have been able to compete, so while they are not damaged goods, they still have alot to prove.

Thanks for the perspective as I am not familiar with their background.

I think Giles' minutes were limited because he was behind 2010 second round NBA pick Armon Johnson. So he had some competition for playing time. And I read that he was slated to start this year for Nevada. Not sure why he left, but I don't think it was because he felt he was going to ride the bench again this year.
