coach questionSince Doh sounds like a dead man walking (not that he hasnt for a while) I was curious for those of you know a lot more about hoops than I do...
Would Scott Sutton the coach at ORU be a good fit for SMU? He has a good pedigree and is already familiar with the territory and being at a private school? ![]()
Re: coach questionPragmatic and safe hire, unless the rest of the family scares you. I'd like to think we'd take our chances on someone w/a higher ceiling, but Sutton is worth a look. Another coaches kid I like is Chuck Driesell.
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones

Re: coach question
I liked what I read on Driesell. Thanks for the insight PonyDoh. ![]()
Re: coach question
love me some Terps, but Chuck is primed to move on from Citadel pretty quickly. The beauty of Chuck is that you get Lefty for free. Nobody recruits like Lefty “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: coach questionFor months (in fact years) people have been saying we should recruit better in Dallas. Then you start naming another ACC/Southern Conference name. Which do you want an ACC guy who will recruit nationally, or a guy who will recruit Texas.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: coach questioni don't think PonyDriesel was one of those harping on dallas recruiting. that was some others of us. Look at Dement though. He was a Southern Conf/Eastern guy and he came in and emphasized local recruiting and paid more than lip service to it.
Re: coach question
They aren't mutually exclusive. We need a dynamic, young recruiter, that is given the full rundown on this program, it's history, and it's true obstacles. Someone on the front end of their career arc. The biggest misnomer in hoops is that you have to 'know' Texas to recruit it. What you need is a fine recruiter, that hires appropriately, and has a plan that makes sense given the institution. I'm not pushing Chuck over better, more qualified, candidates. He's just an example of a high ceiling hire, no different than Russell Springman etc. He's also brought a very unique roster building concept to the Citadel, which makes SMU's issues look like walk in the park. That said, I hope someone other than Orsini is primary on the next HC search. Instead of adding to the war chest to buy out Doh, he hires a search firm to replace Lutz. LOL. If what I'm hearing is true, that process coupled w/slow hr, may have led to us being short-handed this past July. June for AD! “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: coach questionGotta love HR.
Re: coach questionWhat would we have to pay Chucky or even Sutton?
This job is becoming a career killer, is this the next step for guys like that? I'm all about youth in a coach...experience has gotten us nowhere, get a dynamic young coach that can recruit and we will be fine...
Re: coach questionlet's see what Driesell does at the Citadel before we judge him
Re: coach question
Currently, I think Chuck makes 300k or so at the Citadel. No idea what Sutton makes. The key w/hot shot recruiting guys like Pastner, is having a sizable budget for the rest of the staff. In particular, an older, bench savvy, associate head coach. Someone to help navigate the politics of the job, as well as really help X & O. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: coach question
I agree, but SMU may need to take a chance on a guy after a year or so, just to get 5 out of them, if they are successful. See every Tulsa coach before Wocjik. We're a stepping stone job too. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: coach questionbottom line in the college game is recruiting; Conroy did a great job at the Citadel; Driesell appears to be off to a good start. If a guy can recruit here, they will easily be able to recruit to SMU
Re: coach question
I think Russell Springman would be a good hire. Although you have to weigh whether you want an assistant at a big program or a head guy at a smaller school like ORU or Citadel. ![]()
