Special teams have been on the field for about 30 minutes, and the offense and defense are starting to pour out of the tunnel.

Kickoff drills — among the return guys:
Kenneth Acker, Chris Butler, Darryl Fields, Kenneth Pope, Randall Joyner

Nice catch — sort of. Butler got caught leaning the wrong way before lunging forward to catch the ball. He stumbled, but got a hand underneath the ball. It popped up and Butler caught it while lying on his back.

Working on the stationary bikes: linebacker Ja'Gared Davis and wide receiver Patrick Fleming.

Sight for sore eyes: Sterling Moore is running up and down the sideline.

As advertised: Darryl Fields caught a kickoff and headed upfield. He headed to the sideline and turned upfield, and found an extra gear as he burst between safety Hayden Greenbauer and defensive back Ryan Armstrong (junior transfer Northern Iowa).

Kenneth Acker has dropped a pair of kickoffs (although when he fields them cleanly, he looks very smooth running them back).

Mike Loftus has handled all of the kickoffs this afternoon. He has a powerful leg, but the distance on his kickoffs has been inconsistent. Some of his kickoffs have come down between the 15-yard line and 20-yard line, while others landed inside the 5-yard line.

Now moving into skeleton offense and defense drills.

Defensive linemen are doing a drill with the large, foam dummies (simulating offensive linemen), practicing spin moves to the outside. As they turn the defensive players whip the back of their arms around and smack the dummies with their elbows — not surprising to see guys like Taylor Thompson and Mike O'Guin slam the dummies all the way to the ground, but converted linebacker Brandon Henderson (listed at 6-2, 229) just did the same, slamming the dummy aside with a quick backhand.

Not sure why.

QBs throwing to receivers (against no defense) from about the 15-yard line — lot of passes sailing high and out of the back of the end zone.

Must be fatigue or something — passes sailing high as quarterbacks not stepping into passes as much, and receivers dropping passes, sometimes reaching with one hand...

Defense doing a lot of standing around and talking/teaching/learning .... hence the offense focus here.

Marquis Frazier and Kevin Grenier both got some work at NT, but again, it was just walk-through stuff for the defense.
