Reports: BYU mulls going independent in FB

This has been flying around the Twitter-verse the past few hours, with a Fox Sports BBall writer tweeting the following:
goodmanonfox: Multiple sources say there's a strong possibility that BYU goes to the WAC in hoops and independent in football.

A potential move COULD occur by this Friday, but no later than the end of August according to that article.

Definitely something to think about, no matter if you believe part of this story or none of it.

Unless they feel the MWC will implode, how does this help them? The WAC is a lateral move (at best) for most sports. The WAC's geographic footprint overlay's the MWC's, so there wouldn't be much of a savings in travel costs.

So unless BYU is CERTAIN they can make SIGNIFICANTLY more money as an independent in football, that change doesn't make sense.

wow that is a serious blow for the Frogs if true. Wouldn't that get the MWC down to 8 teams? That conference would look a whole lot worse. You'd have TCU, Boise, Air Force, and then not much else. I'm sure they'll add somebody. Fresno? Does that really get them anywhere? Don't see any way they are in the BCS conversation.

I don't doubt they are mulling it, but that's still a long way from leaving. I have a hard, hard time believing this is a viable long-term option, especially when there is still a possibility that the MWC is still in the running for a BCS spot (given they expand to take the right schools).

Besides, I argue when the Big XII goes to 10 teams they are going to HAVE to expand to take 2 schools to survive, and BYU brings by far the most to the table. I have to believe that's when they (and possibly another MWC school) go to the Big XII.

At that point is the MWC an upgrade over C-USA? I'd think we'd be better suited in our current situation with much closer regional conference mates like Houston, Rice, Tulane, UTEP, and Tulsa. The only advantage to joining another non BCS qualifier conference if if you thought they were on the cusp of being offered an automatic BCS qualifier bid. No way in hell that happens now that Utah and BYU have gone by the wayside.

Besides, I would think the first invites would go out to Fresno State and Nevada.
