Frazier as our NT

Postby GeorgiaMustang » Tue Aug 17, 2010 7:12 pm

I don't know what the rest of you think, but I like having Marquis at nose. While he was good at DE last year, I feel like a line consisting of Thompson, Frazier, and Hunt is going to be quite imposing, especially considering the strength and size of each and the fact that Margus seemed to grasp true DE skills as the season progressed. Do you think this is a permanent move for Marquis, or do you think he will bump out to DE once O'Guin catches up like expected?

On another note, I can't wait for September to get here. Go Ponies! Beat Tech!

I think the reasoning for moving Frazier inside is that the coaches must really believe that Margus Hunt is ready and capable of being an every down defensive end. Also, if worse comes to worse and Margus isn't quite ready for that yet, Frazier will have no problem moving back out to end and we try to plug the NG gap with a combination of Davis, O'Guinn, etc. If Hunt is the player the staff thinks he is, then we have an extremely large and athletic front.
Back off Warchild seriously.

those 3 give us a pretty imposing front 3, for sure. Sure would be nice to have bigger LBs to go with them, but we've got some playmakers among our LB group, and this defense is built more for the spread offenses we will see on our schedule. It's not like we are competing in the SEC

Guys, I think I was among the first to jump on this bandwagon (of moving Frazier to nose), but him practicing there for a couple of snaps doesn't mean a hill of beans at this point. Right now the coaches are just experimenting with changes to the lineup. Remember, Frazier moved in to nose several times last year, and when he did so I'd say Kevin Grenier came in at least as often as Margus did (probably more).

I think it's a little more to than you think. I believe Frazier could start the season at NT but could see some spot time at DE. Also when Kate broke the story it seems as if she spoke with Coach Mason about the issue.

It's ludicrous to say Kate "broke a story" that's been discussed on PonyFans since last fall.

Sure Frazier may find a permanent home at nose. Not saying he won't. Only saying that him lining up there for what was about 5 snaps this early in 2-a-days is a bit premature.

In a 20 minute in-depth interview with Mason a couple of weeks ago at the PonyFans show at 1st & 10, Mason said basically the same thing about Kevin Grenier.

Again, I'm not saying this won't happen. I'm just saying it's a bit premature to name him the starter at nose when he just took a couple of snaps there Monday AND in light of the fact that he did basically the same thing last year (started at DE and moved to nose on passing downs).

He played NT Tuesday as well. Mason also said that it was Fraziers job unless some beats him out. Now apart from the bantering, I believe this would put the best 3 defensive linemen on the field. Granted, we do need more solid defensive linemen IMO. By the way, PerunaPunch I am going to try some of the wax your company makes and see how it does. Looks like it's some pretty cool stuff.

What are the chances of SMU going with a walkon 260 pound NG with no experience against Texas Tech's behemoth offensive line on a warm mid afternoon 2:30 game?

Nobody else appears ready.

Its going to be Frazier.

Exactly — against a line like Tech's, they'll go with a bigger lineup. Against a lesser line, Frazier will play both positions.
This really is a non-story. Frazier played inside some last year, too. He'll play both spots again this year. He's a talented player who also is versatile, and will benefit SMU's defense from both positions.

Just returned from practice this a.m. and Frazier was lined up at NG with the first team all morning. From what I could tell, O'Guin was running with what I thought was the second team.

I think this also says something about Margus Hunt's improvement. Right? The way I see it, the coaches must be more confident in Hunt's development if they're allowing him to play more than just spot duty/obvious passing downs and start at DE.

Right. That to me is the story: Margus Hunt.

I think it comes down to the fact that JJ is giving himself and the team multiple options on the D-line. I think this is a fluid situation for the first few games until he finds the combination that works best.

As far as Hunt, if he has really developed into a starting DE, I see good things ahead for this D.

How much could Hunt have developed since the first season? He said himself he didn't really concentrate on Football this summer because he was concentrating on throwing, which while I didn't like hearing I understand that is the deal and was glad he wasn't blowing smoke up are arses. But point being, I don't expect him to be much more improved than he was in the bowl game. So, how was his preformance in the bowl game?
