You don't think that they would crawl on hands and knees to the big 12 and beg for admittance there first?
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

you dont think they've already done that? Like somebody else said anyway, BYU will reconsider and MWC will be fine, this is a UT style negotiating tactic.

BYU may well reconsider, but it doesn't sound like this is only a negotiating tactic. I'm not sure what they would really gain by strong-arming the other MWC schools to give them a bigger slice of revenue. We're not talking about an MWC money pie that amounts to much anyway. I don't see alienating all your conference mates just so your share of revenue goes up by another million or so. If ESPN is on board, I think BYU really could do much better financially as an independent. A lot of schools would want to schedule them.

I think BYU was stung big-time by UofU going to the Pac-10. They are not used to playing bridesmaid in the state of Utah. BYU is seriously looking at their options. We'll know in a few days I guess.

i agree completely that uu going to the pac 10 was a major blow to the ego of byu. it would not surprise me in the least to see them go independent and therefore save face. at that point tcu is left with boise and some other schools. losing uu and byu is a big time loss to the mwc and pretty much dooms any bcs aspirations.

BYU athletics: Cougars on verge of WAC, where Boise State might return

Boise State, according to reports in Idaho, has a no-penalty clause that would allow it to back out of joining the Mountain West. This would leave the WAC with nine football schools while bumping the league up to 10 schools for other sports.

Furthermore, if the WAC decided it wanted to expand to 12 teams, a USU source said, there are a few MWC teams that would be happy to join BYU in a move back to the WAC, with the Mountain West a suddenly unstable conference.

If more than BYU and Boise State were to make a move to the WAC, the Mountain West might be crippled in many ways and be forced to seek schools from Conference USA to fill the unexpected empty spots around the conference table.

Salt Lake Tribune

Done deal: BYU to go independent in football

Brigham Young University will leave the Mountain West Conference, go independent in football and rejoin the Western Athletic Conference in all non-football sports beginning in the fall of 2011, The Salt Lake Tribune confirmed Wednesday morning.

According to a source in the WAC office, BYU will seek final approval for the moves from its owner, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, either today or Thursday. Pending approval, a press conference is planned for early next week. But because of media reports that broke late Tuesday night, that timetable may change.

“In light of the media leaks, it may be expedited a bit,” the source told The Tribune.

BYU’s move to leave the MWC, become a football independent and rejoin the WAC — which it belonged to for nearly four decades before departing with Utah and six other schools to joint the Mountain West — has been in the works for the past month, according to the source.

BYU declined to confirm reports of the pending move. School officials are aware of “the ton of rumors flying around out there,” BYU associate athletic director Duff Tittle said Wednesday morning, but that doesn’t mean the reports have validity regarding the school’s future in the Mountain West Conference.

However, BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe, in a July meeting with reporters, acknowledged that BYU going independent was “an option” the school had been looking at the past six months, along with several other possibilities.

Why?

BYU has repeatedly expressed unhappiness with its paltry television revenue from the Mountain West Conference. Member schools netted less than $2 million per school in football television money last year from the MWC’s television network.

The pressure on BYU increased when Utah accepted an invitation to join the Pac-10 last month, beginning next year. The Utes could make more than $15 million annually in football television revenue when it achieves full member status.

Not only were the Cougars not invited to join the Pac-10; the Big 12 announced soon after that it no plans to expand again after losing Nebraska to the Big 10 and Colorado to the Pac-10.

BYU already has its own television network in place and now has a broadcast center to go with it.

According to an espn.com report Tuesday night, the Cougars will play four WAC teams per year in football. The school will also now be free to cut its own television deals with networks like ESPN, and perhaps agreements with bowl games.

Thus reinforcing the quality of their Cougar High education. Looks like MWC is not a good place to be right now.

Would BSU just go back to the WAC and leave TCU in no-man's land? I don't see value in MWC conf with schools like SDSU, New Mexico, UNLV, etc. Those are non-fb schools that are struggling to keep their programs afloat. Why would UH join that conf? Now, if TCU and BSU stay together, and AFA doesn't leave, then I see the value, but still very unstable.
