Daily Campus ... again
Do you have to even take a journalism class to write for the Daily Campus? I picked up a copy when I stopped by the campus this afternoon, and ... ugh. I read one story — the soccer preview story, previewing the Jordan Mann Alumni Game — and it seemed like it was written by that writer they used to have who didn't know anything. In this one:
• The description of Mann included ... "contributing to the team's national ranking."
WHAT national ranking? No. 1 in the country? Top 20?
• ... "played in the Final Four Tournament."
The Final Four is an NCAA copyright referring to the final two rounds of the NCAA basketball tournament(s). The NCAA soccer tournament is the College Cup.
• ... "and also was selected for the Southern Conference and Conference USA Honor Rolls.
The SOUTHERN Conference? Huh? WTF is that?

I really thought the paper would get better with a new staff this year.
When I was in school, it was actually worth reading.

I can't believe the DC's habit of pirating stories from the Dallas Morning News and PonyFans.com. They should be ashamed to put their names on stories like that.

I saw that! They did a story about McCann, and took every quote from PonyFans.
I worked at the DC for a couple of years, and we never would have been allowed to do that, but we also never would have done it in the first place.

Journalism was one of my majors from SMU and I could not stand the DC.

I understand that one of the sports editors quit recently. The staff is now stretched thin and lacks experience for several sports. Some know woman's volleyball, woman's golf and soccer as an example but are now thrusted into reporting of football and basketball. My guess is there is a significant learning curve for some of the staffers.
And let them copy Ponyfans. It’s not like what any of us says is worth money! Maybe, just maybe, the students will understand staying for an entire game is actually interesting!

I doubt they are quoting the opinions posted by most of us (or they are really hurting), I'm guessing they are probably quoting original articles written by PonyPride...though I don't know that for sure since I don't read the DC, but then like I said they are hurting if they are quoting us.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
