Fitting In: The Cowboys have been in training camp for a little less than three weeks now, and secondary coach Dave Campo is still trying to figure out who his fourth cornerback will be. McCann, Cletis Gordon and Jamar Wall are all battling for that spot, and Campo said the player who is the most consistent throughout the next few weeks will get the fourth CB nod.
So Far: McCann thought he played well against the Oakland Raiders last week, and the stat sheet agreed with him. He logged three tackles, returned five punts for 50 yards and had a kick return for 22 yards. At practice, he's had his moments as well, though he said he has been humbled a few times going up against receivers such as Miles Austin, Dez Bryant and Roy Williams.
Best Asset: Head coach Wade Phillips gushed about McCann's speed in his press conference on Tuesday evening. "McCann has worked hard at his technique and he has ability," Phillips said. "He can run - he's got good speed. He's got good cornerback speed."
You Should Know: McCann's life could have been very different if he hadn't been on the field for the third game of his senior high school football season. The all-world athlete was playing safety when two players collided with his leg. "They just rolled up on my leg while I was still standing and it just snapped my leg in half," McCann said.
Because of that injury, schools shied away from the future star defensive back, so he chose SMU instead of heading to the Pac-10 or Big 12. Now, more than four years after the injury, he still plays football with a plate, eight screws and a "rod going through my ankle to hold my foot in place," McCann said.
A Mouthful: "Camp's been a lot more fun than I expected it to be. I knew I was going to enjoy myself, but all the stories you hear, going to the professional level, 'It's this, it's that' - and it definitely is a grind - but at the same time it's a lot more fun, a lot more entertaining than what I was expecting," McCann said.
