The ideal press conference around April 1

Postby Hoop Fan » Tue Mar 09, 2004 6:37 pm

I would love to see Mr. Copeland step to the podium in a couple weeks and introduce the new coach with a strong message, very strong. That message would be that SMU intends to RELY on Dallas area kids like never before and that we are committed to being Dallas's college basketball team and making Dallas and our alums proud of the program. What stronger message could we send? What better strategy is there? I believe the path is clear and the opportunity is right in front of SMU. I also believe the timing is unique. We can always hire the flavor of the day from the assistant ranks. This is the time to re-connect with Dallas, and Jimmy Tubbs is the man to do it. There is no downside. Unless there is a rabbit in the hat, I have never felt so strongly about an issue connected with SMU sports and I didn't just show up to this message board yesterday.

From afar, I like the passion in your position. Can't tell if he is the right "coach", but sounds like the right "recruiter". Is recruiting more important than coaching? Not a challenge, just not sure if he is the right guy for that role.

Second, to make your day even more impressive is to announce the renovation of Moody, including a practice court to accommodate the Men and Women, who also deserve attention.

:D

P.S. Bring back Men's Track & Field and build a new aquatic facility in order for SMU to be truly considered "big time" in college sports.

WP, how do we know that anybody would be a good 'coach'? I assume you are talking about Xs and Os and game strategy specifically. Should we assume Wojcik from Mich State or other guys are automatically good coaches for some reason? I'm almost afraid to ask this but why does the majority on this board SEEM to imply that Tubbs is probably not an equal coach or strategist and that he is only a recruiter? What basis is there for that implication? I am not talking about you in particular, but do you see what I am getting at?

I gotta tell you, I think guys like Wojcik and Tubbs all know basketball very well. It comes down to leadership ability and recruiting connections. I believe Tubbs can lead based on evidence from his time in Dallas. I also know he can recruit and will get a big boost with the head coach title. I don't know about Wojciks leadership, but I can pretty safely say it will take him years to get Tubbs connections in Dallas and honestly he could probably be at SMU 100 years and not match Tubbs local connections. Thats reality to me.

All it takes is money. Keep those checks rolling in guys....especially the BIG ones. Thanks.

HF, preach on brother.

HC- Jimmy Tubbs
1st Asst - Robert Lineburg

Nothing is ever a sure thing but I like our chances with those two.

Hey WebGuys, this guy has to be your poster of the week. Very clear and well thought-out. HoopFan should be on the search committee.

Actually, the press conference I would love to see in April is the one where they say, "after winning the WAC tournament, the NCAA play-in game, and two games in the NCAA tournament, we feel that Robert Lineberg has merited the promotion to head coach from interim head coach". That would be what I would love to see in April.

Now your talking, if we are going to dream they might as well be lottery dreams. I personally would love to see Lineburg be the succesessful head coach of this team. I like everything I have seen and heard from the man so far. He has controlled PASSION and I love it.

I cant argue with that because it would mean something real good happened. Lets hope. I like the heck out of Lineburg. My ideal for the situation would be he stays as the first assistant to Tubbs and Lineburg gets a good raise to do it.

I would imagine it's more of a coaching committee now and I would gather he gets a lot of input from Crawford.
