SMU offers receiver

Postby Corso » Wed Mar 10, 2004 3:05 am

Insiders also is reporting that SMU has offered a scholarship to Dallas (Skyline) WR Mikail Baker (5-11, 180, 4.36) -- seems we're going after more serious speed!

He reports medium interest in: SMU (offer), Baylor (offer), Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas A&M.

Sounds like the coaches are trying to make this the fastest team around, and I'm in favor of that. Big uglies up front, and sprinters all around.

Judging by the interest (if in fact he's getting interest) from Oklahoma State, Texas and A&M, it sounds like this guy isn't just a sprinter who wandered on to the football field by accident.

But does he want to be a sprinter in addition to a football player?

Maybe he would like to be a female equestrian too?

Latest update on Mikail Baker on the Insiders says he's been offered by Baylor and SMU and at this point favors Oklahoma State slightly over BU.

He also plans to run track (10.46-100m/22-200m) in college. "I'll do both for conditioning."

Track? That doesn't bode well for us. Let's just sell him on the idea that he can still run ON the track for conditioning.

Maybe David and Buddha can talk him into being on the female equestrian team instead.

Just another thing that pisses me off. I'm a huge football fan, besides being a track alumni. Couldn't our AD just see that no track team is going to really hurt our recruiting in the skill positions? Especially since the Track team added one of the top sprint coaches to it's part time staff this year.

ANSWER: NO it won't because when was the last skill position that was also on TRACK? Michael Carter?

We abandoned competitive TRACK (running) events long ago, we only carried the FIELD (shotput) teams.

Let's see Kevin Thornal, Brian Berry, Brandon Kid all did track during their career, and yes we were mostly field events, but that can be attributed to the fact we didn't have anyone fast enough on the football team and to the fact we didn't have a viable sprint coach till this year. The new coach coached some of TCU's best sprinters in the last few years.

And you bring up a good point, the time when we had alot of footballers doing track was the time when we were actually winning football games.

No we definitely will lose interest and some commitments from sprinters as well as others who wanted at least the OPTION to compete in Track-it might be only 1 in every class or two but those dual sport FB/Track athletes are out there and will likely cross SMU off their list.

Garrett, Griffin, Gilford, Harper and Humphreys all RAN track last year. Sprints, and the long jump. SMU wouldnt have won the 2002 WAC title without the points that Kevin Garrett scored in the sprint events.

The track team has never not competed in the sprint events, they just havent been as successful as the throwers.
