You should talk to some that didn't go to Tech. Last edited by Junior on Wed Sep 01, 2010 4:47 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Yes I've been to Austin a number of times as a visiting fan. I've been to a couple of UT-Tech games there, several national championships, several conference championships, dozens of Texas/OU games, LSU, Ole Miss, Auburn, Tenn., Arky, you name it. And the only people worse than those in Lubbock are in Columbus. The fact that one year you managed to play in a big game (before losing as the #2 team by 45 points 2 weeks later) does not excuse what I saw that night. You can pretend it's a welcome place for opposing fans, but everyone else- that is, the opposing fans- knows it isn't.
Re: Welcome to Lubbock!
OK, I didn't read through all of the school bashing so I don't know if someone else already gave you a bar rundown.... but here is a quick run through. "The Broadway Crawl" - there are good bars on Broadway, very close to The Overton, they WILL be crowded as this is a college town & a game weekend. But you can't go wrong with the mix of Chimy's(best margaritas in town), Mesquites(usually beer bucket & well specials on game weekends) & Cricket's(great drink specials, usually a band on game weekends & a room of pool tables, shuffleboard, etc.) "The Depot" - there are alot more bars down in the Depot District. Daquiri Lounge, Blue Light, Beer Garden, Bleachers, La Diosa Wine Cellars, Thirsty Turtle, Bash Riprock's, JJJ Chop House & Brewery, Klusoz, Shooterz, The Library... etc. etc. etc. ALSO in the Depot is Louie Louie's Piano Bar and it is very very fun... 82nd & Slide has Fox & Hound and a few martini bars, and the Abuelo's at 82nd & Quaker has a wonderful bar while your waiting.... Hopefully that helps.... have fun this weekend!
Re: Welcome to Lubbock!I've never been to a Tech game in Lubbock, but will say that my only impression of Tech fans was in 2008 in Ford Stadium when I was sitting in front of 2 male Tech fans/alums, about 30 yrs old maybe. One of which was holding his 1 yr old daughter.
The ENTIRE game they were screaming obscenities directly at my friends and I while pushing us and showing little regard for his crying baby. Instigating a fight while holding your kid? Real cool, bro. If it weren't for the baby in his arms, I would have responded differently, to put it lightly. Tech fans put the A-S-S in CLASS Go Mustangs "I love coaching here at SMU University" -June Jones

We won two national championships in 1981 and 1982. 2010-30=1980. Apparently you can't do math, either. I've been to Austin as a visiting fan. Nowhere near as bad as Tech or even LSU.

Re: Welcome to Lubbock!Raiderred came on this board extending some hospitality in the form of recommendations. Very nice gesture and well presented. I did not read all of the pages on this thread, but let me offer this. Most Tech fans are great folks. The kind you would have as friends. Where things really get crossed are with the Leach era students (grads from the past 6-8 years + current students). What all the causes to this hostile mindset are... probably too complex and numerous to eleborate on at this time.
I have been to numerous game at Tech. Mostly sat with Tech friends in sections with normal working professionals. No problems whatsoever. Last two games, was close to the student sections. Horrible experience. The four letter words were so numerous that you would think they must have training classes for this behavior. I was with Tech friends at these games as well and they were horrified at their own students/young alums behavior. One former player at Tech almost got into it with a couple of their students. This summer, I was in Lubbock playing golf (Rawls course) with a couple of ex Tech fb players. I was the guest of a long time friend who nows holds a lofty position at Tech (there for 3 years now). After golf, this fan issue came up. My friend who is now a Tech employee stated that he was embarrased at some of the behavior that was reported to the Tech administration. He is the one who stated that most of the unruly behavior hit it's peak in the Leach era. Ex Raider fb player stated that he and his wife had decided a few years ago to not attend any Tech game unless they were invited to sit in a box. They could not take the language and hostility. I have no idea if anything has been done about it but my friend (employee) said that this was an issue he personally was going to see that the administration got their hands on. I will see him this weekend and find out. Would like to hear next week about the experience you had if you go to the game.

well said, our position as a small private university with the strong public perception of being elitist will certainly have an impact. "There ain't nothing you can't solve with one more beer"

Re: Welcome to Lubbock! My Texas Texas Tech alum daughter teared up when I told her the horror stories of some of the rudeness. She tried to deny it happens but much like the above post, admitted there are some bad apples in the barrel, but insisted some get out unspoiled.

Re: Welcome to Lubbock!bad apples are everywhere; I've had bad experiences several places but have never been one to call security; I've been in situations where others have and when the perps were escorted out, security got an ovation. I guess it's up to everyone to do what needs to be done...and that doesn't mean starting a fight.
Re: Welcome to Lubbock! My top 3 worst experiences have all been at SMU/Arkansas games, and I was raised an Arkansas fan. Never saw it until I left for SMU.
