The only two things I am hanging my hat on:

a) I didn't think we had any prayer of stopping Nevada's running game, either.
b) Potts can be flustered. Big time. It only takes one big, blind-side hit.

One big play early on offense, and one big play early on defense, and this game can be won.

The trick is getting the fans booing... loud and early. With all those extra seats in Jones, that's a lot of extra people to turn on Potts. They are just as likely to be hostile to their own team as to ours with a slow start.

But would I put money on it? No. I can't stand dear darling Patton, but his prediction is about as realistic as any in this thread. I'll go with 35-14, Tech.
Stallion doesn't think I'm a stinkin' genius anymore.

i will go with this

The Mustangs are a much different team under coach Jones, and they will definitely not go quietly in the opener. However, the Tuberville era should begin with a solid victory at home, but it won't come easy.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Texas Tech 31, SMU 27

34-24 Tech. I am trying to keep my expectations reasonable.

I really appreciate the fans like Patton who have actually watched alot of football and know what the hell they are talking about. SMU has a zero % chance of winning this game. Bet your house SMU is not going to score in the 30s.

I think alot of people have been reasonable but where does this cockiness from some of yall come from? One winning season and now you are gonna roll into one of the hardest stadiums in the country to win at and you are thinking there is no way Tech will hold SMU in the teens?

Nevada didn't have its full running game in the bowl game. There is a big difference between a wounded WAC team on a neutral field and a healthy Big 12 team at home. Again I don't think this is the majority of fans but you lose any credibility with these kinds of comments.

Tech had a top 50 total defense last year and was number #2 in sacks and just brought on a coach from Alabama and Tuberville to run the D. I don't know of any position that SMU has better athletes? When teams like SMU beat a team like Tech on the road it is because the game was overlooked, which will not happen in this case. How exactly does better athletes and superior coaching even through a scheme change mean Tech won't hold the SMU offense in the teens? I personally think SMU wills score 24 (probably a TD in garbage time) but I just don't get the rational. Did anyone see Tech vs Alabama or TCU a few years back? This offense can be stopped, its not a roll the ball out and we have at least 35 points. So the Tech corners are suspect? SMU would kill to have Tech's corners. Honestly, the best attribute about the SMU team is the starting D-line but who is after those guys? SMU is going in the right direction but is at least a year out from having a really competitive team. On offense, I think it will be very apparent at just how bad Shawnbrey and Sanders will be missed. Tech will take Robinson away and stop any run game and make the rest of the team beat them.

I'm sorry it just gets old year after year, oh SMU will beat Tech, no. One bowl game against mediocre competition and losing your two best players does not make a world beating team. All of this confidence should be interesting to see after a deafening cheer when Padron gets a wicked hit laid on him from a blitzing LB.

We have a competitive team now and Tech is breaking in a new offensive and defensive scheme. To say we have zero chance of winning is stupid.

Well, now that the burning bush has spoken, we can all go back to our daily lives. Thank you, oh great and wise one, for saving us four hours of our lives that we can now use to make the world a better place instead of watching a football game.

SMU will score more points that it did in Lubbock in 2006 (3).
SMU will be defeated by a smaller margin than it did in Lubbock in 2008 (36).

Most of the things people are saying here are really not that outlandish. It's also a horribly simplistic analysis to say Nevada was thrashed simply because they were missing 2/3 of their three headed rushing monster. Tech has a very, very good coaching staff Tubbs has put together. It's simple naivety if you don't objectively recognize the SMU coaching staff as very high quality as well. SMU is too thin depth wise, and too thin on the lines. Personnel in many places is better matched up with spread CUSA offenses. SMU hasn't played a competitive game in Lubbock in over 20 years. This year will be the best opportunity to do so.

As someone who was born and raised in the south, I have watched Tubbs get tight-ass in many situations. I think he will come in with an extremely conservative gameplan, as he fears being upset at home in first game as head coach. With that said, I think SMU will keep it "closer than the experts predict."

Is a win likely for SMU? No, probably not.

Is it possible for us to go out, play competitively, and have a chance to steal a game against a more talented opponent? Very much so.

It has happened almost every year to some team, often times in FAR more shocking fashion than this game would be vs. an unranked TTU team.

ESPN has us with a QB, LB, and Oline advantage over tech...

not to mention coaching advantage...

Oh yeah...and two of Tech's sack leaders from last season are gone as is their best corner. SMU will score and score often.
