Another coaching candidate

Postby WildHorse » Thu Nov 08, 2001 4:09 pm

Don't know how logical it is, but I'd love to see SMU make a run at Doug Williams. The former Tampa Bay/Washington QB is head coach at Grambling now. Sports Illustrated ran a story a couple of weeks ago on him, saying he's 17-2 in his last two years there, and that Grambling might not be able to hang on to him. I don't know if SMU will pay the cash necessary to get him, but from all accounts, he has turned into one hell of a coach. And as charismatic as he is, he could recruit anyone. Give him a staff that starts with Giles, Ringo, Belin, Schumann and Faucette, and let him build the rest of the staff around them -- maybe even with some other holdovers from the current regime. Williams will be a star in the coaching ranks on the Division 1-A level one day - why not at SMU?

I am from that area so I know that this guy is for real. Williams is a hell of a coach, but I think SMU needs a name. Yes, he does have that NFL experience, but not many outside of Louisiana would know this guy. We need a Spurrier Jr or Tommy Bowden or Charlie Waters...

Don't know Doug Williams?!? As in Superbowl MVP Doug Williams? Whadaya mean no name?!?! I must be getting old. Wasn't that around '88?

I think it's a terrific idea!

Course he's been out of the limelight for awhile, but I seem to remember being quite impressed with his poise in front of the camera. Seem to remember the guy having a lot of charisma.

If nothing else, the guy DEFINITELY would be worth talking to and interviewing.

I was offered up weeks ago as this site's sacrificial Redskins fan - so needless to say, I'm completely up for Doug Williams as the Ponies' next coach. Very smart, charismatic, etc. Would be a great choice.

And yes, PerunaPunch, you are getting old.

Anyway, I ran the Doug Williams idea by the guys at the office (the font of all football wisdom, you know), and they liked the idea. Certainly thought Mr. Williams had the 'name'.

One small problem: Williams is a Grambling alumni, and as such, might be a permanent fixture there (i.e. would rather coach HIS team rather than step up to another school albeit a D1 school). But again, certainly worth investigating.

No offense, but just becuase a man was superbowl MVP doesnt mean he carries a name with the current generation of high school football players. Doug Williams is a great coach. He is a great team this year with Grambling. But for SMU to win, we need a BIGGER name. A Tommy Bowden or a Steve Spurrier Jr would do wonders for SMU...Look what a guy like Lou holtz did at South Carolina, he turned them into winners after one season as coach. That is what it is going to take. We need a big, big name coach, and now...

Like the idea of chasing Williams. He's got a winning attitude, which we desperately need. It is fine to talk about a Bowden or Spurrier Jr., but does SMU seem willing to pay the $$$?? Will the administration and faculty see to a full commitment?
