No- What I was pointing out was that our recruiting has been just as good since Tubbs left. Maybe with Tubbs as HC he can sell it better but I think it is tiresome for people to criticize Dement and at the same time praise Tubbs. There were no Dallas recruits except Erion until Dement. Tubbs went and got some for Dement. Dement went and got some talent after Tubbs left. The talent is the best right now as it has been in a long, long time as far as next year goes with four 3 year starters and one 2 year starter returning. Maybe Tubbs will coach it better and maybe he'll get more talent (I like that the HS coaches are putting themselves on the line) but neither of these things is a certainty like the Dement bashers try to say. I just like to try to balance things out on occasion.
I would agree that there has been no noticeable dropoff in recruiting since Tubbs left for OU. Dement did a decent job of recruiting considering the restrictions placed upon him. Dement was a solid coach, but the team stopped responding to him and that is what cost him his job.
I think Copeland is going to recommend a coach that he thinks has the best ability to take SMU to the next level. I think we can probably guess which candidates that may be taking into account Copeland's recent hires.
There have only been 6 guys signed since Tubbs left that I know of: Reay, Pearson, Bennett, Roberts, Killen and Ritter. None are from the good programs of Dallas either. Its too early to say if there has been a dropoff in quality or not. Roberts is an impressive recruit and I like Pearson alot, but I am definitely concerned that we will not see anymore recruits from Lincoln, Kimball or Lancaster like we did with Tubbs. That is a concern when you talk about your own backyard and the overall health of the program.
I'll take an all-state player from Florida any day. In fact I'll take 10 of them and even I could win an NCAA title. You could probably take 10 from Washington DC and do the same thing. You could also do the same from Dallas. A program is healthy if it is winning championships. That's the bottom line. Which coach will win the WAC next year with the talent already on this team and one round of the NCAA tournament? That is my goal and I don't care whether its Tubbs, Roberts, Haith, Jones, Wojick, etc. Winning isn't everything, its the only thing!
