Top things to change at Moody

Post by gostangs »

I don't think we need new building - I like the scale and noise of a small building, but there are few inexpensive, and a few more expensive things - if Tubbs gets to talk about that now it would help recruiting immensely -

Scoreboard - need a big, interactive one - seems like it would be the easiest quick fix.

Move offices out to new sports center, - widen concourses and move consessions to outside of the concourse, put a few boxes where the consessions were and punch through a few seats to get the site lines. Much more expensive but doable - best effect would be moving the high dollar M-clubbers out of the courtside seats into the boxes - so students can get more access to courtside seats. It would help if our male students would not be such pansies and actually come to the games - I just don't get how red - blooded american college students don't make their own basketball games.

Get some additional electronic signage capabilities to add revenue.
that way we can skip some of the goofy shows and let the band play more -

If it is loud, do it - if it is quiet - don't do it.

Moody can rock like no place else when it is a tight game, the students are there and the band is controlling the crowd - it only happens a couple of games a year - but it is great when it happens.

Additional thoughts?

thats a good plan if you ask me. I'm not much on the idea of replacing Moody. The thing we need is a practice gym in a contiguous but separate building. Wonder if it could be Dedman when the new student rec center is built if I remember correctly.

1. Floor (outdated)
2. Lights (lighting is terrible)
3. Scoreboard (old)
4. Practice Facility with offices

somebody who knows help me with this - why is it bad to practice where you play? Seems like you are just creating duplicate facilities for the fun of it.

Because you have to share with Womens' bball, Volleyball.

I love moody.....it is a great place to watch a game, not a bad seat there! Right on top of the court!
I think we should stretch the front of the building out closer towards the street so we can get some more bathrooms and concession stands ect. in there. get a new scoreboard and then replace those 4 screens in each of the corners with some flat screen tv's for instant replays.

its more court time and sharing with the womans team and volleyball. When volleyball has a game at Moody, it forces the bball teams to practice early in the day and conflicts with classes. Also summer camps and special events.

The other thing I think is that the inside of the arena needs some serious paint. The beams in the rafters are a dingy greyish-blue and the railings down on the court are silver.

The standard talking points used by most schools are (i) there is only 1 court; (ii) the Men's team, the Women's team, and the voleyball team all use the same facility which makes scheduling practices difficult and allowing "unsupervised voluntary workouts" during the offseason difficult  ; (iii) you have to put the coaches' offices and film and meeting rooms somewhere.

A practice facility would have at least 2 fullsize courts, offices, locker rooms and film rooms adjacent.

I don't believe there is any plan to tear down Moody, but long term, I believe there is a plan to re-face Moody in a more traditional Georgian style in line with the rest of the campus and Ford.

I agree that we cannot tear down Moody. I love that old place. Renovations are definitely in order. But that cramped, old-style feel should be an asset, not a liability. Take Cameron Indoor, for example. That place is a relative dump, but it's an extremely difficult place to play, because their fans are absolutely nuts, and they're right on top of the court. Much like Moody. (Duke's team is really good, too, but that's not my point here.) Basically, we just need more crazies and a better product to sell, and people will cease to b*tch about Moody. Widen those hallways, and get those offices out of there, but leave the inside alone.

Here's a really stupid question: Let's say Mustang die-hards Kathy Bates and Aaron Spelling donate the millions of $ necessary to build a new 2-court practice facility. Where do we put the thing? The intramural fields behind the parking garage? The Mrs. Baird's plant?

Just a guess. Build a nice parking structure where Moody parking is now and then put it in the smaller Moody lot.

What 'moody parking' are you refering to? The only parking around there is the street next to moody (between moody and the parking garage) and the dedman lot. The dedman lot will disappear when the Dedman center is expanded. Are you suggesting taking out the street to add a new garage? (btw: taking out the intermural field isn't an option - it is the only one left.)

What about Mrs. Baird's bakery, which is now owned by SMU? Maybe the plan is to demolish it and put the new facility there!

If you look at the master plan, behind (east) of "New Dedman", there is space for another building, that is prospectively labeled "transitional building/indoor tennis facility" Additionally, there is a parking lot behind (due east) of existing Dedman (I actually think this is ramped and goes from Dublin to underneath Dedman, as it is where the homecoming floats were built). The space is available if you think about it.

Moody

Post by moodymadness »

I think Moody is a great place to play but it just needs a few cosmetic fixes along with a new scoreboard and sound system. But I think just as important as the building is the atmosphere in the arena. SMU could use some serious improvements in game presentation, etc. Have you ever been to a Mavs game...always something going on, always music playing... it is just a fun place to be. Having a winning team will help the situation but with some improvements in the arena and game presentation Moody Madness will reign again.

I think all the students should decide on one color and wear it. Did anyone see the Michigan games w/ the student body in all yellow? Impressive. Or Mich. State in all white. Now, one of these years in the near future when we're all at an NCAA tournament site, what should be the color to wear? Red? Blue?
