I agree. Tubbs and Lineburg are very close friends. Would not surprise me to see him retain coach L. And that's just fine by me.
I have a good feeling about this hire. I had a mental picture of Bhop, Isham, and everybody else he recruited celebrating when they heard the news. Good job Copeland.
I'd like to see Lineburg stay on. He showed me something as interim. Would also like to see Tubbs bring in a local high school coach, ideally Bishop from Lincoln. Bishop comes to nearly all of the games at Moody. Wouldnt mind seeing either Crawford or Brickey stay also. There would not be enough room for both, but its doubtful both would stay anyway.
Tubbs will define himself by the assistants he hires and that will be interesting. It would be nice if he held over 1 or 2 of the coaches, BUT it would also be nice if he brought some new energy into this program. Tubbs is making a major league step up from #2 assistant at OU to HC at SMU. There is a lot that goes into the job of HC and Tubbs needs some new energy into the program.
His supporters were touting the fact that he'll run an up tempo offense and pressure defense with a lot of motion. That's nice, but the last time I looked at our roster it hasn't changed. With the likes of Simpson, Castro, Rack and others there is not the athleticism required to run an up tempo offense. I think you'll see Tubbs give BHop free rein of the offense and that will be interesting.
The cynic in me tells me this hiring is one of those local "feel good" hirings that won't cost the university much in term of salary and additional facility improvements. I really hope that is not the case.
BigEasy, give Tubbs some credit...he was hired because he was the best candidate for the job. The fact that he is a local guy that the community will support is just icing on the cake. He does have some tough decisions to make as far as assistant coaches and style of play but I am just grateful that SMU Basketball now has a solid foundation to build from. Copeland and the Committee deserve credit for this hire and I am now excited about the future of SMU hoops!
Which DISD coach will be hired as an assistant do you think? Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing a turnaround next year. That is what this is about. Winning and winning fast. Let's rally around Jimmy for a real great run next year and so on.
