This is strongBesides being buried on page 8, todays article in the DMN is STRONG. If the tone and statements in that article don't get you pumped up about the prospects for SMU hoops, nothing will. Take this quote from James Mays the coach at South Oak Cliff, "We're going to send players here...I think everybody wants to help Jimmy because he will put forth the effort to succeed." To the right of the text in the margin are Rivals top 10 Texas recruits for 2005 and 2006. Guess who Darrell Arthur, the #1 ranked player in the 2006 class plays for? That would be James Mays and SOC. There are no guarantees in life but what better chance could we have at SMU? Do what you can folks, buy more tickets, make a donation whatever. The time is now. Its on.
Tubbs was page one yesterday, I was hoping for two days in a row. I really thought Blackistone would do a page one column, maybe tomorrow he will. All of the local news stations led sports with the Tubbs story even with the UT game. Channel 11 called it a Dallas Homecoming with a special feature. Overall, the Tubbs reception is every bit what I thought and more. East, not sure why you dont favor Tubbs, but my main point is what the key high school coaches are saying.
Great articleThe interesting thing about the article was the statement that it has been two years since SMU successfully recruited a DISD player. How ironic that SMU wasn't able to get any DISD players while Tubbs was at Oklahoma. Things should change dramatically now that Tubbs is the head coach at SMU and local high school coaches are in his/our corner.
I didn't say I didn't favor Tubbs, I was just smacking you guys on his Christmas Card list around a little who said it would be page one news. There was no mention of it in the Washington Post. I have faith in our Committee and Copeland that he is the right man. I will support him 100% at least until we lose our first WAC game next year or if we repeat the tank job we pulled this year. I've taken down all the names of those who were wetting themselves over Tubbs. You get no right to complain about any coaching tactics, no right to complain about recruits going to other schools. Just kidding. You're free to complain all you want. Its a free Country (at least for a few more years).
we knew it wouldnt make the Washington Post, but it was big news in Dallas, page one on Friday. You dont expect him to lose any WAC games? With expectations that high of him, how could you ever consider hiring anyone else?
I'll eat all the crow any of you want me to if Tubbs does not lead SMU to an NCAA tournament in his time here. But dont put words in my mouth, because no one should expect it to happen next year. It could happen but after an 8th place finish and a number of games where we got killed on the boards, SMU will not be picked by many experts at or even near the top of the WAC.
My sister lives in Greensburg, Pa. and she called me to say she heard about Tubbs on the news up there (she is a big Pitt fan).
I was surprised, but pleased.
It doesn't help when the announcement is made the day of the Sweet Sixteen. Also doesn't help that UT was still involved in the tourney. Those two (2) things tend to eat up a lot of the sports page.
OU coach Kelvin Sampson was on the radio (ESPN 103.3) yesterday. They were talking to him about the Sweet 16, etc., but they also asked him about losing Coach Tubbs to SMU. He was as complimentary as he could possibly be. I don't remember his exact words, but he called Coach Tubbs "an outstanding coach." He said he expects it to be a lot tougher immediately to recruit in Dallas, and that OU and UT and other big programs now have another very legitimate hurdle to overcome when trying to get players out of the Dallas area. He said that one reason Texas Tech has done so well, of course, is because of the play of Andre Emmett, a player who wasn't recruited heavily but went on to become a star. He said Coach Tubbs will have to find a player like that to come to SMU, and said "he will."
I was thrilled to hear Coach Sampson speak like that. He easily could have done the "assistants come and go" routine, but he went out of his way to compliment Coach Tubbs for his coaching, as well as for his recruiting.
I was in Ponte Vedra at the TPC and this announcement made the Jacksonville paper, with a brief article. Was great to see. Now let's hope Jimmy can keep some of next year's best seniors in town for their collegiate careers. We've got to win NEXT year to start building this program. Now the question is: if Jimmy builds it, will they come? (more than the 1500, that is)
I think we will all be pleasantly surprised when SMU begin to draw new fans from all over DFW. I like the comment that we are Dallas' university. That would help FB too.
Go C-U-S-A, Go-U-S-M-U ![]() Pony Up
Hey, I live in FW and I keep hearing about TCU being our home team. Makes me sick. If Coach Tubbs and Coach Bennett can combine to keep a bunch of local kids home and can put the Ponies at the top of the "home" team list, I'll be one happy Pony. Of course, beating TCU wouldn't hurt, either.
