21 Years of Futility against Rice

Postby Caballo » Tue Sep 28, 2010 1:40 pm

Rice has basically owned us since 1989. Everyone has heard that we last won in Houston in 1986. But, the real travesty is that in the last 21 years we are a combined 6 wins – 15 losses to Rice. For us old timers, this is the epitome of how far in the dumps our program has been. Growing up you could always count on a Win against the Owls. That has not been the case in recent history.

To put our futility into perspective, here are the results from the last 21 years.

89 6-35
90 28-30 (A)
91 10-31
92 13-28 (A)
93 24-31
94 10-17 (A)
95 24-34
96 17-25 (A)
97 24-6 Win
98 17-23 (A)
99 27-2 Win
00 14-43 (A)
01 37-20 Win
02 15-27 (A)
03 20-41
04 10-44 (A)
05 27-7 Win
06 27-31 (A)
07 42-43
08 27-56 (A)
09 31-28

I suggest that we don’t overlook the Owls and that we establish a new trend starting this Saturday by winning in Houston. We need to beat teams like Rice on a regular basis. That will reestablish order in the universe.

BTW, at a June Jones Foundation dinner, I actually mentioned to June that SMU had not won at Rice since 1986. I don't think he knew that until I told him.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

At least June has first hand knowledge of getting spanked pretty bad down there, that was his SMU debut, in which a 13-0 lead turned ugly very quickly.
Probaly won't happen...BUT...maybe it will!!

in fairness that 2008 rice team was pretty good. thor (who is now with the texans) was quite a player who played multiple positions. they had a good qb and dillard at wr.

they recently beat unt. they gave ut a pretty good game.
we can win this game but i'm not overly confident.

They were manhandled by Texas. They got a gift TD at the end of the first half because a Texas defender fell down. Their other score was inconsequential. The Texas offense blows.

You're right, George S Patton, Rice scares the Hades out of me.

We have not won in Houston against Rice in a generation. Rice has some good athletes and has shown they can win this year. Sure Texas beat them but a truely great Texas team should have blown Rice out of Houston. Instead Rice gave them a better game than we did TCU (on the score board).

We will beat Rice. I think we all learned that it was going to be struggle for Texas offensively but the defense virtually gave the Owls nothing. Texas was up 17-3 right before that gift TD at the end of the first half?

I just like our team and the way we're playing. I don't get into this comparative scoring business because every week is different.

Now, I'm not suggesting Rice is going to lay over. They won't. We're going to get a push. But I think we're more physical and our LBs are good and we can limit their offense's effectiveness.

We're not bad.

In fairness why don't you just put up our whole historical record from 1989-2008 so we can properly see that we were futile against a lot more teams than Rice.

The point is that yes, we have sucked over the years pre-June, but when your record sucks against the suckiest of the suck teams (traditionally) that just shows our ineptitude and lack of commitment from the University to field a competitive team.

I for one feel that has changed for the better.

What comes out of a Max Yao's arse?

Wasn't that the game that Rice broke Bennett's collar bone? It was a pathetic game in the second half. Recievers and kickers looked good. Too bad Willis played for the Owls that day.
