Ricky Joe MeeksJust wondering why he doesnt get more snaps? If you think about it he had a better percentage than any of them. Um i think he was semething like 7 of 9 for around 50 yards on the first defense, Chris and Tony were against the two's. Also speculations are he is transferring ? Anyone know anything about that ? I dont no, i was jut impressed with the improvements he has made since the fall. I dont no if they were improvemetns but definitly looks like he has confidence out there. But you could tell he was very frustrated with his snaps. Also I was impressed with the offense. Looks like things will be very exciting next year, and hopefully we will just keep getting better. The first ifive games could dictate the season again for us. GO PONIES !!!!
Where'd you hear the transfer talk? I've wondered about that, although I haven't heard anything. He's a young guy with some ability, but it looks like he's buried on the depth chart. If yesterday's scrimmage was any indication, it looks like Phillips, Eckert and Romo are the obvious leaders, and that Rowland seems to be next. Meeks and Nixon seem to be at the bottom of the ladder, looking up. I hope he doesn't go anywhere - you can't have enough talented QBs. I'm assuming he trails the others (at least in terms of snaps) because it appears that Phillips and the JUCOs, at least, have stronger arms. Maybe the fact that Phillips played last year and the experience the JUCOs bring makes the coaches feel more comfortable with them? I don't know .... just speculating.
I really, really hope he's not considering transferring. If he does, though, my bet would be Abilene Christian, A&M Commerce, SFA or someone of that ilk. There's a lot to be said for biding one's time...Romo & Eckert are Jrs, Phillips a Soph...I'd rather wind up with a BJ (can't remember how to spell his last name from Tech) than a Chris Sanders.
I was told that the coaches are happy with his development from last season, but arm strength seperates him from Phillips, Eckert and Romo.
With that said, I wouldn't discount him too much. We have all seen very successful quarterbacks at every level who did not possess a cannon type arm.
well yeah i guess arm strength can play a role. Applewhite, Tom Brady .. they really have strong arms .. sorry .. i would rather have a leader like them two than arm strength, brains and were to go with the ball is more important. Now granite you have to ge the ball there. I just think this is a shame this is out there, whether its true or not. I guess we will find out in the next couple of days. Lets try to keep each other updated on this. I think he is big part of out program. He Is a leader and we need them around. Anyway i just hate to see good players leave a program on the rise.
Beware the new poster whose first post says he's "heard speculation".
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Dooby,
I didn't hear speculation. I was told this by someone within Mustang athletics that I would rather not name who is at practices regularly. I am not a Meeks basher. I was reasonably impressed by what I saw and clearly stated that many great quarterbacks do not have cannons for arms. Personally, I am thrilled that we are presented with our current problem....a fairly large number of talented quarterbacks.
Ricky Joe is 4th string on this squad right now. I though he made some good decisions passing, but it is obvious that he doesn't have natural arm strength. On the one fly pattern he threw, he had to really [deleted] and launch. It was not a smooth delivery.
I saw him in practice last year, and I saw the Red/Blue game - his progress is very encouraging. He looks infinitely better than he did last year. I don't know if it's because his skills are better suited to Coach Burns' offense, or if he's stronger, or if he's happier at SMU, or if the sun rose in the West instead of the East -- whatever the reason, he looks greatly improved.
I hate it that I wasn't able to make Red/Blue this year. Thanks to everyone for the outstanding observations. Re: Meeks, I haven't heard any transfer rumors, but I sincerely hope it's all B.S.
For the couple of spring practices I've watched, Meeks has made huge improvement. Last year he looked like a little kid out there. This year, he looks like an honest to goodness college QB – big, commanding presence, good decisions. I sure as heck hope he sticks around because if he can keep improving like this, he's going to be a good 'un.
Mike Damone,
From what I've heard 6 reps in the spring game isn't competition. I believe some of the qb's have been shorted on reps from the begining and haven't had a fair shake at the job. I've seen Phillips play and I've seen Ricky Joe play, give them equal reps, equal play calling against an equal defense with the same offensive personel and you've got yourself a competition. Who knows Phillips may still be your guy but we'll never know until ALL the qb's get a fair shake. If he stays(hopefully) or if he goes he will make a good qb for someone. Great young man with good morals an leadership qualities. I would think that's what SMU is looking for. Yet, Mr. Damone is ready to ship him off.
On every team in america - the first QB and maybe the second are happy, and the others are not - it will always be that way - and the better the program gets the more pressure for them to perform and SMU to keep them happy. Nothing to worry about either way.
