I thought you were either a qualifier or nonqualifier on the date of first admission. He was admitted to SMU right? And taking courses at SMU? As opposed to a local CC or JC?

One SMU head coach told me emphatically last week that if a kid is admitted to SMU they are either qualified and immediately eligible or they would not be admitted. Not too sure about all these conditional qualifiers and non-qualifiers mentions by Pony Doh.

Explain Vilde. Admitted and taking classes at SMU, but not eligible until next year, b/c he didn't get through the clearinghouse. They appealed but the result hasn't been made public. Smith was originally denied by the clearinghouse, but upon appeal was allowed to take classes & practice. That was the last official word from the SID. He's made it clear that he thinks his eligibility hinges on his first semester grades.

You know SMU does have one quirky admission standard different from NCAA-and that is an extra foreign language requirement-however SMU allows a conditional waiver if the class is completed in the first semester. Wonder if that could be the class he needs to complete. So he would have passed the base NCAA clearinghouse requirements but second requirement is that recruit pass SMU's own admission standards. Passing the foreign language course would then meet all SMU and NCAA Clearinghouse requirements.

When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.

It's possible, I don't really know the exact situation, other than to say most are confident he'll suit up this year, but it's still not final. Leslee himself thinks he'll play, and has made it clear that a whole helluva lot is being expected of him on the court.

How do you reconcile the basketball player situations with those of the denied football guys?

Both hoops players are foreign and their transcripts differ from a typical American transcript. Vilde's academic platform was different growing up, but it's thought he can handle the work. The football kids, rightly or wrongly, were seen as suspect w/regards to handling the work load.

If you come from a foreign country, don't you usually have a foreign language?

maybe not in Smith's case as he's from BVI. Vilde speaks multiple languages, as does Pats.

FWIW, Vilde still hasn't heard on his appeal from NCAA, but seems resigned to being redshirted. Not official yet, though.

Technically wouldn't call Vilde a redshirt-he only gets a 4th year on the following conditions:

A nonqualifier shall not be eligible for regular-season competition or practice during the first academic year in residence and has three seasons of competition remaining. A nonqualifier during the first academic year in residence shall be eligible for non-athletic institutional financial aid that is not from an athletics source and is based on financial need only.

A non-qualifier may earn a fourth year of competition, provided that at the beginning of the fifth academic year following the student-athlete's initial, full-time collegiate enrollment, the student-athlete has received a baccalaureate degree.

A student with a diagnosed disability who was not a qualifier may earn a fourth season of competition, provided the student athlete has satisfied specified procedures and has completed at least 75% of his or her degree program at the beginning of the fifth academic term following the student-athlete's initial, full-time collegiate enrollment.

Not real worried about the specifics, cause he's probably not a 4 year kid anyway, from what I saw at Lee this past year. He could easily make very legitimate money overseas in the next couple of years. We actually have more kids on the roster right now, that will get paid to play somewhere, than we've seen in quite sometime.

Not that this is the place, but I've heard some funny discrepancies about Leslee's age too.

I will remember that when we are in the tournament this year and you win 11 games, mostly against teams in Division 2.......

Now, now...some of them are Division 3!

Seriously, do you think UNT is going to win the Sun Belt again? I honestly have no idea, but I would think that Western Kentucky will end up being a challenge.
