Interview with Assistant Head Coach / Offense Dan Morrison

Postby Webmaster » Tue Sep 28, 2010 2:58 pm

After practice this morning, PonyFans.com met with the Mustangs' Assistant Head Coach / Offense Dan Morrison to get his thoughts on the TCU game, Kyle Padron and the upcoming game this Saturday against Rice.

Enjoy!

good stuff from Dan.
The problem I have with this offense is that it takes too long for everyone to grasp it fully. Was Colt Brennan there for 2 or 3 yrs?

Once June stops getting Kyle to run to the sidelines, I guess we'll know that he has graduated to another level.

Brennan was 22 and had 3 years as a starter and a redshirt year at Colorado under his belt before taking on the Run and Shoot and despite being immediately productive he said that in his first season he ran the offense "trying not to screw up". As for the sideline thing, Brennan did that all 3 years at Hawaii and he was June's most productive collegiate QB.

Brennan also played in a west coast offense in high school. June uses a lot of WCO/Bill Walsh terminology with his version of the shoot.

We have an amazing collection of coaches at SMU. Hope they all stay for the duration.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

When I watch the Hawaii Bowl (which is pretty regularly), it's easy to remember just how young Padron is in his development as a quarterback. If Coach Mo and Coach Jones believe he is coming along at a suitable pace, I agree.
Great interview, webbies

We'll see if Preston Conner might challenge Kyle for the job. If Kyle stays in the starting role, he should have a good handle on it by his late Junior and early Sr year.

It's Conner Preston.

J.J. McDermott is the first who will have a shot to challenge for the job, but the job isn't up for competition. Padron hasn't had that Hawaii Bowl-esque performance yet, but he's a hell of a lot better than a lot of quarterbacks out there. He and his receivers will continue to sharpen ... hopefully starting at Rice.

He mentioned Zach Line's receiving ability. I look forward to some passes being thrown his way.

True, we need to see more swing and shovel passes to Line especially if Padron and the wideouts continue having trouble getting on the same page.
