Effect of Rangers Game Saturday

Postby Harry0569 » Mon Oct 04, 2010 9:57 am

I know this dilemma has been thrown around, but I wanted to gauge what the PF's were thinking about the issue.

Game 3 of the Rangers/Rays series is set for 4:07 CT on Saturday. Since the Rangers haven't been to the playoffs since before Y2K struck fear into our hearts, I would imagine that the game will sell out. What kind of effect will this have on attendance on the vard, and at the SMU game?

Not a Rangers' fan and don't live in Dallas, but I suspect it will be a big draw, especially against the Rays who are an excellent team. And the Rangers have a chance, given that the curse of the Washington Senators fans ended a few years ago when the Nationals came to Washington.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

I am talking more about the students/general public/casual fan of the mustangs. I know the die-hards will be there, but will those people that we desperately need to attract show up?

Even worse, we might lose the average college football fan to Baylor Texas Tech or aTm vs Arkansas, both games in Dallas.

Oh well....just show up and beat Tulsa.

For the most part, I think you're talking about 2 different audiences. I'm sure there are some dual Mustang and Ranger fans. It's a tough choice but since they start at 4, I wonder if some of them would back to Ford to come see the second half.

I'm with the Rangers for 152 games (just not the 10 when they play the Twins) so I'd like to see them make it.

I'm going to have a bit of challenge getting from FW to Dallas because of the Rangers crowd and Texas A&M-Arkansas at Cowboys Stadium.

Short of Texas/OU or a Cowboys playoff game, I can't think of a more challenging scenario from an attendance perspective this coming weekend. Multiple Big-12 conference games AND a Rangers playoff game = SMU mouse running amidst a herd of elephants. I expect a very small crowd.

On the plus side, I don't think the people who will be attending the respective Big-12 games on Saturday would generally attend an SMU game anyway.

It really illustrates how much things have changed since the early 1980s. Back then the Mavs were just getting started, the Rangers were horrible, and the only non-SMU college football games played in Dallas were Texas/OU and the Cotton Bowl. WAY more competition for the entertainment dollar in Dallas these days.

We should promote the games more. Why not have yard signs we can put out every game week? Beat Tulsa on Central?

As for most of us, it just means a second TV on the BLVD to watch the Rangers prior to the SMU game.

Highland Park played a game the same night we played TCU. I bet that had a bigger impact than the Rangers game will on our Tulsa attendance. Of course, the people who went to the Highland Park game had no trouble giving away their tickets to SMU-TCU. That won't be the case for SMU-Tulsa, which was going to be a "diehards only" type game, anyway.

You hardly ever see people wearing SMU stuff at Rangers game. Consistently see lots of TCU, UT and Tech stuff at The Ballpark. It's a different crowd, with more of a Tarrant County slant. I'm thinking TCU-Wyoming at 2:30 is going to have more empty seats because of the Rangers than we will.

Baylor-Tech and A&M-Hogs will probably have a bigger drain on our attendance than the Rangers. SMU students will be partying with their Tech and Aggie friends in town Saturday night.

We will be showing the Rangers game on both TVs from the Blvd on Sat.

Any poster on PF that choses Rangers over Mustangs should hang their head in shame.

That being said, we will be losing some folks that otherwise might come. I also wish the school would have scheduled fall break for next week when we are away at Navy - that is going to be a big attendance blow as well.

SMU should set up a ticket kiosk at Jerry World and the Ballpark, encouraging folks to "keep the party going". Fortunately all the other events around town are during the day and not a direct time conflict.

Recruit hard this week & beat Tulsa
