The State of SMU BB

Postby SoCal_Pony » Tue Oct 05, 2010 12:32 pm

There are 12 (13 including mine) original threads regarding BB since September 1st, with a majority of them not even dealing specifically with the men's program.

Our season begins in less than 6 weeks.

I'm excited to see the new kids, and what sort of improvement we can expect from the older ones. If we get a nice production upgrade from Haynes/Nuk/Clink, and the new guys ball, we can run that weak sauce OOC. If not, that's the end of this era, I'd imagine. I expect Dia to be a beast

Are you saying you expect Dia to improve -- or that he's failed that expectation? He's been a good player for us, but to me he's no where near what he could be. Could be a monster.

This is Dia's year, no two ways about it. He was very good as a frosh & junior, but he should be dominant as a senior. Guy should try to dunk anything within 10 ft and no more fades. Hopefully, when they double down, he's smart enough to find a shooter. We have several guys who can fill it from deep(Nuk/Clink/Pats/Walker/Frog)

I think Haynes is the most likely "break out" guy this year. I'm look for him to become a double figure scorer. Maybe Nyakundi, but only if he does more scoring inside than he's shown us so far

I expect Pop to blow up this year. He was huge for us down the stretch last year. One guy I want to continue to see improving is Rob Nyakundi. Kid is a legit legit shooter, and hopefully we can get into sets where he can rain threes.

Strangely, I see Clink as being a kid that can put points on the board. Good shooter that never really got comfortable and consistent last year. If he can just go to the basket a little more, it'll help him from distance. For some weird left field reason, I could see him getting close to double digits as well

He's got to get more comfortable handling the rock, which is a pretty big concern for me.

It's not a concern, if you don't play him out of position. He's not a primary ball handler, that simple. Unfortunately, the only pg on the roster is Frog. I think he may surprise, but that's a lot of pressure. I'd like to see Haynes make the biggest leap this year, but he's just not a shooter. Hard to predict big PPG increases when you don't shoot well, and are reluctant to pull the trigger.

Haynes can take the ball to the rack though, and hopefully, he continues to do that.

My problem with playing Clink at the 2 is that we are so damn undersized in the back court. Just like last year with PM and DW, we gotta destroyed on the perimeter.

I'm sure it will be about the same. Maybe even smaller due to the OOC unfortunately.
