Helmet LogoI know the old story goes that the Ford Mustang is named after the ponies....... but I've always wondered who first used the mustang logo? Did we steal it from Ford or vice versa?
Don't we have it trademarked (or whatever the term is) with the pony running to the right, and Ford has theirs running to the left?
The donkey's name is Kiki.
On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney? Good, Bad...I'm the one with the gun.
The logo was traced off of the grill of a Mustang and given to Hayden Fry. He did not use it for a year and then put it on the helmet.
Trademarks are industry specific i.e. cadillac cars, cadillac dog food. Once a logo is used or permitted to be used, it has a trademark to it. Thus our Mustang logo on a football helmet may very well not be copied without our consent. But we couldn't put that logo on a car hood.
Re:
The Mustang faces forward on each side of the helmets, meaning one runs left to right, the other right to left. I think most university-issued material (brochures, t-shirts, etc.) all have the Mustang facing the same way, but it's clearly recognizable as a symbol of SMU facing in either direction.
I think it might be more appropriate for SMU to have their helmet Mustangs running backwards until we win a game.
Re:
It always runs forward on the helmet, unless we go ofer September again next fall. Not sure about who has a trademark, as I've seen it on a Canadian Football League team whose name escapes me right now, and plenty of HS teams. Maybe since its not an exact copy of Ford's trademark everybody else can use it.
