He wasn't considered a national 5 star recruit though but Texas gets more respect these days Willie Davis was No. 6 Chad Elsey was around No. 14- 16 Then they had two big guys who were approximately in the low to mid 20s
#2 in the state of Texas, today, would likey be a 5 star I would think, if not right on the cusp. So Sass has high 4* likely. #6 is Texas is definitely a 4*, Willie. SMU has had quite a few players in recent years ranking in the mid-teens to 30 range in the state of Texas. D-Rob was #10-12ish. Harp was #14. Alex Malone and Leslee Smith both top 25 guys (Smith maybe even top 15?). BHop and Dez. Heck, Chris Ray was the #23 C in the nation according to rivals, his ranking in the state had to have been decent. Plus the 3 guys we have mentioned above. I have no idea what Damon Hanc*ck or Q Ross were ranked coming out of highschool but I would guess they would be no worse than low 20's. This year, Cannen, Jones, and Manuel should all be top 30 guys, with Cannen leading the pack as a possible top 10 in the state. That would be my rough guess. PonyDoh or Pappa may have more insight there.

Damon Hanc*ck and Ross were both Texas Top 10's easily

another Top 10 Texas recruit was not big 6-11 kid locally that had the serious brain surgery and had to lay out a couple of years.

1) These kids will be signed before the season really starts. 2) Doh is still gonna have his say, who are we kidding. He'll figurehead the whole thing, argue w/refs, dicker w/the rotation, practice & game management etc. It's just not his offense or defense, so Mangino is essentially in charge of execution. Let me just say this, I'm friendly w/a few ex-SMU assistants, and Armen @ Rivals did a piece on Mangino right after he was hired. It was the most telling piece I've ever read about the staff and it's roles going forward. Do you guys know how rare it is to hire a search committee for an assistant coach? What's even more mind-boggling is that he has no recruiting responsibilities. When he talks and references Doh, it's like "i have complete confidence that Matt will get the right players to work in my systems etc.' Believe me when i say some of our old assistants were slack-jawed by Mangino's confidence. They never had that sort of say. He talks like an associate head coach, and his responsibilities are more a long those lines than a foot soldier like Brown.
Any news on Lutz replacement? by PonyDoh » Sun Jun 27, 2010 5:38 pm moodymadmen wrote: Insiders tell me Doherty isn't calling the shots on this hire for Lutz replacement. SMU insisted on using the search firm Eastman and Beaudine to handle things. Not great news for Doherty if he isn't being allowed to hire his own man at this point...but with all the turnover he has had its hard to blame SMU for taking a different approach this time around. PonyDoh: This search isn't nearly that important. They are just looking a for an old X & O guy. They new guy won't have much, if any, recruiting impact. Also, I've seen the list of the final 3 candidates and there is no way a search committee picked them. Pretty much all of them are old NE guys, or spent time on the bench w/Doh. We've done away w/the recruit coordinator label, but Brown is probably the closest to in charge PonyDoh, thanks for getting on board with what I was saying in June. With that said, great great news on Cunningham...definitely a step in the right direction

I know it takes time to build up a program, but until now [outside of papa/pmccoy] we haven't had a nibble on relative big-time recruits. I'm assuming this reflects on the asst. coaches?
You guys are blowing this way out of proportion b/c both Jones/Cunningham are local. Great grabs for the program for a variety of reasons, but let's not act like Cannen Cunningham is head and shoulders above Ricmonds Vilde, or Jones is better than Smith head up, just b/c rivals.com says so. Manuel & Jones are 3 star kids which is par for the course in terms of what we recruit. Every other year under Doh, we grab a 4. Let's see how we close, and be thankful the locals are now on board. This isn't even Dohs best class on paper yet, so lets not make it out to be something it isn't.. The huge difference in the program is the on court direction, and the folks who are teaching those systems. Doh is going to get his on the trail. Now we can just look forward to a few locals..

they had great offers, but if you are comparing Rivals ratings to Rivals ratings, believe they were 3 stars.

I know Dia was a 3 star but am pretty sure that McCoy was a 4 star that moved between 3 and 4.

Ha, that was excellent info you had. I was on board several weeks later after I got my own confirmation. Very rare indeed to hire a search committee for assistants. Someone sold someone on a plan, and they moved on it. That was good stuff MoodyMadmen. Good week to be a Mustang!

If you mean underperforming the recruiting hype, maybe. But, both the level (starting to move in that direction?) and results on the court will need to get better.

I think DM75 meant was that Brown is a great recruiter but not that good of a coach. And the main reason he wins is because he just has more talent than everyone.
