Dubious Distinction"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: Dubious DistinctionSo, in the history of college basketball, a Division III team has hosted a Division I team exactly three times...and two of them belong to SMU under the current staff. Ouch.
Re: Dubious DistinctionThis is humiliating.
We might as well go balls-out and schedule a community college. "I think Couchem is right."

Re: Dubious DistinctionFeel a little like a 6th grade wanna-be bully slapping kindergartners around and taking their snacks right before nap time.
Re: Dubious DistinctionTwo things;
1) That's a Dean Smith game for Harp. SMU under Doh will always play in the hometown of it's recruits, at least once in 4 years. UNC has done it forever, it's a very good policy and I hate all things UNC. People should chill. 2) We have so many kids ineligible right now, we need as many games like this as we can get. Our transfers and ineligibles are far better than what is actually suiting up. Just saying “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Dubious DistinctionMaybe it's asking too much, but a little pro-PR spin by Doherty and co., just tweet or donate 8 seconds in a preseason speech to the (good) policy of playing in the hometown of one of the players. Maybe he did and I just missed it.
There isn't a D II school close to Harp...?
Re: Dubious DistinctionAbilene Christian is a Div II school, but it's way on the other side of the Abilene metropolitan area. Why don't we schedule several road games for Harp. Stay a weekend and get Hardin-Simmons a home game as well. On the way back, SMU could get games with Cisco JC, Ranger JC, and Weatherford JC. I'm excited about the new basketball recruits coming in, but there is ZERO defense for scheduling McMurry on the road.
Re: Dubious Distinction
It's the only team/timeframe that fit, and would still get Harp home. It's a great policy you whining nancies. Complain about some of the other cupcakes, not one that fulfills a promise to a kid who gave you 4 years. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Dubious DistinctionI think we've beaten the horrendous schedule topic to death. We have a thread on the BB page to talk about it. We all understand it and hate it, but there's nothing we can do about it.
The Occidental game was scheduled on the way to the failed-Hawaii visit to get a game. Isn't it about right that most DI teams play about 2 of these less than DI schools in a OOC schedule? It's a no-win situation for Doherty here. In spite of the recruits he's bringing in, if he blows a couple of these (there's no reason to think he won't based on his history, and we'll see if he can leave the X and O stuff to that other guy), messes around at .500 or worse in conference (no return to trip to Memphis) and get squeeze out something like 18-11, I wonder if he can stick around to see these recruits.
Re: Dubious DistinctionThe 2011 class, plus Vilde and Giles also becoming eligible next season, keeps Doherty around for 2011 unless something goes terribly wrong. 18-11 he CERTAINLY comes back.
Re: Dubious DistinctionTo come back, Doh has to succeed. To succeed, he has to recruit well and win. Therefore I want Doh to do what it takes to retain his job.
Cheer for the guy and wish him well. It's good for him, you, and your team.
Re: Dubious DistinctionI hear ya, Ponyboy. My first year at SMU was 87-88 with that SWC championship team. That's what drew me into it. The BB program has always been the program I've embraced more than any other bc I was volunteer on the SID staff between Larry White and Ed Wisneski.
So to see fall into these depths has hurt. And that's why I get so passionate about where it is and what I'd love for it to become.
