k. padron check down

Postby smustatesmen » Sat Oct 16, 2010 8:30 pm

Watching #2 now for seven games, I was hoping he would mature mentally this year to what he did instinctively last year. He seems physically able to do the job and is very obedient to Jerry during the games and I'm sure during weekly practice sessions. But, is he mentally able, because it appears he can't check down on his receiver core quickly enough to compete outside Con. USA.

Who's Jerry? And you're right about the checkdowns, because the of McNeal and the stripped down offense Padron ran last year he looked to check down a lot more often, now with him trying to digest the full Run and Shoot it looks like he is trying way too hard to hit vertical routes resulting in him holding onto the ball forever and not even looking to check down before he takes off/launches deep ball.

Mentally able? Absolutely. About the only drawback of the Hawaii Bowl is that his performance (and that of his teammates) was so good that it overshadowed how new he is to the game. He has been on rosters for years, I assume, but he played what, a half a dozen games in high school before getting hurt, and today was his seventh start of the season, giving him 13 starts in his college career, and still fewer than 20 in his entire life?

Padron is plenty smart. He also has plenty of talent, toughness and athletic ability. He's still developing, that's all.

I have to say, it's a refreshing change to have a quarterback with 19 touchdowns and just six interceptions .... and people are actually complaining.

i agree with lefty. a lot of people want the performance of colt brennan or padron in the bowl game, week in and week out. thats an unrealistic expectation. look at what gilbert (texas) has done in his first year as a starter... JJ has been slow to give KP the full reigns bc he realizes how difficult it is to master this offense.

Thats plenty of starts ...we need to stop making excuses for him. Truth is - that this offense is so pass heavy there will be some INT's - and thats ok - it all comes down to when they are - and todays was in a tough spot. It happens.

dont really want to hear the "he has only started ___ games thing anymore - its getting embarassing since that number is getting pretty big now.

i for one was not making any excuses but go back to the thread i posted in differences of Padron or BLM. pick which one had better numbers after 12 starts. everyone needs to ease up. going into this week Padron was
40th in passer rating
14th in yards
4th in TDS

everyone have a cocktail [edit: <--adult beverage] and enjoy the ride, or atleast propose who should start in his place?

Well said Expony. The fact is he is the best option we have and a darn good one. Anybody who thinks there is a guy sitting on the bench who is going to do better is misguided.

I think he is capable and see him progress a little every time I watch him.....I like the fact that he doesn't appear to get shaken and seems to have confidence when he takes the field after a mistake was made. We may feel like it's an old excuse but he IS young and learning from a great coach.......we need to be patient.......this program is improving and I love the feeling that we can win every game we play. Yesterday's loss wasn't KP's fault-it takes a team to win and every player on the field helped lose it for us. We will bounce back and I think-- hope-- that we go undefeated in the rest of conference play. At this point, every game we play is a learning experience for our young guys and hopefully they can realize what corrections need to be made. Patience, my Mustang friends.

He is getting better. Just need to take batter care of the ball and make better throws late in the game. Only 6 INT's all year but 3 came in one game (Tech), In the 4th against TCU, fumble late in the game and a INT in the 4th against Navy. Big mistakes! He is only a Soph. he wiill get better.

I was begging for him when we had Bo Levi. So let me ask you this..... Would you rather have some Bo Levi or some Padron? LOL I think that is a easy one.

Keep your head up Padron!

Every time we lose,it takes me several hours (some times several days) to recover. But, in retrospect our losses all have one thing in common--losses to pretty good senior quarterbacks. While I felt our running game disappeared yesterday--despite Kyle's scrambling, the biggest difference seemed to be a very confident senior quarterback; not only does he have talent, but experience and leadership to rally his troops. Kyle will be there by the end of this season, I think he is developing very quickly.

My hunch is that Padron's reluctance to make ANY mistakes is his biggest hindrance...makes him tight, he wants to make the RIGHT throw in this offense, not just a good throw, holds on to the ball way too long to make that throw, nervous about int's. I don't want to call him a perfectionist (June Jones does) and that might be a big part of the problem. There are so many options in this offense (remember every play is basically an option without set routes) he's gotta be a little overwhelmed.

Against Navy, I think he made some good progress in accepting less than perfect results - he threw two balls away early in the play and took off running early several times when he didn't see open receivers right away. For the record, he also made a couple of absolutely phenomenol throws. Have some patience and remember he's a sophomore and enjoy his improvement knowing he's a work in progress. He's going to be VERY good next year & incredible his senior year.

He's approaching very good this year. I thought he had a fantastic game and took what he was given.
