Hate to break this to you but its not the ACLU but its all the modern Head BB and FB Coaches at Ole Miss that have tried get rid of the Confederate Flags and other symbols of the Confederacy. Winning in College Football and Basketball is about recruiting. Here's a little project-go look at Mississippi's record in the 1950s and 1960s something like 6 New Year's Day major bowls and then go look at Ole Miss' record after SEC integration say 1972 to about 1998 or whenever Dr. Turner and others started to try and get rid of Confederate flags etc. Ole Miss won 6 SEC Championships and 3 National Championship during this period. Ole Miss went from being one of the true elite national football programs to an SEC also ran. Its dumb as hell for any football fan of a school in the South to wave a Confederate flag or parade around a Confederate mascot when you win or lose with African-American football and basketball players. I can guarantee you that if Ole Miss didn't stop using all their [deleted] traditions and retained the same gameday tradition they had around dessegregation that they would have remained irrelevant in the SEC. Since Ole Miss has started to rid itself of these obviously racially divisive symbols they have become more competitive in Football and didn't they BB team win their first SEC championship ever?

and from Wikipedia:

Since 1983, the administration has distanced itself from Confederate symbols, including barring faculty from displaying any Confederate imagery in their offices. In 1997, the university student senate passed a resolution requesting fans not to display the Confederate battle flag at university athletic events. Using this action as encouragement, the university then banned sticks under the guise of fan safety, to discourage fans from displaying the Confederate flag at football games and other athletic events. This controversy began when head coach Tommy Tuberville complained that the battle flag had hampered his attempts to recruit a few top-notch black athletes.

A couple of coaches prior to Tuberville expressed concerns about the difficulty of recruiting top-notch black athletes.

Really?...I was just guessing on this but makes sense and that explains it. Thanks.

Doubt it. Illinois lost the Chief. The legislature attempted to intervene, but to no avail.
The Chief wasn't even a "mascot".......and it is still generating controversy.

William and Mary alums are still ticked about losing the "Indian" mascot to a Griffin whatever that is. But the NCAA said lose the indian and the feathers on your logo, or go without any NCAA championship games. Given they have been in the 1-AA playoffs for 3 out of the last five years and hosted several games, it was a penalty that had real teeth to them.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

What's the deal with FSU and the Seminoles? I know that the Seminole nation voted in favor of letting FSU keep and the name and in fact enjoy it, but what kind of penalties would the NCAA look to enforce? Did they just say "We are ready to go to court?"
