What good does it do to save time when your senior receiver makes one of his few game catches and is not smart enough to step out of bounds to kill the clock.

Clock stops with a first down. If he thinks there is something to be gained it is worth the risk. Once the chains are moved, Padron can spike it if he wants the clock stopped. Stupid move in the NFL but not a big deal in college as long as the first down is made.

but it's stopped for the chain move only, right? Meaning KP wouldn't necessarily have time for a production meeting with JJ?

From the film I watched the next drive started with KP throwing a pass over the head of a wide open JJ. Another thrown behind him. Hard to watch.

On to Houston!

In the hurry up Padron did not go to the sideline. He gave the receivers hand signals while the line was getting set.

It looked to me on the ill-fated int that Beasley was to clear out the middle linebacker but instead of going with Beasley he jumped the slant route. I would call that good coaching on Navy's part and SMU getting out-coached on that particular play. Navy must have noticed a particular tip-off or tendency on our part. Kind of like TCU intercepting not one but two shuttle passes a couple of years ago. Out two-minute offense was pathetic. Must be trading ideas with the cowboys. Why throw a 3 yard pass where the receiver is tackled and 25-30 seconds run off the clock! We needed the yardage and the time! Never gave ourselves a good shot at a win/tie.

I think the LB was one of the main reads on this play. If the LB sits(which he did), Beasley is open, if the LB jumps Beasley's route, then DJ is open. Pretty simple to understand that an LB standing almost still is not gonna be able to defend a pass to a receiver thats even with him and crossing in front of him. The hard part is recognizing it quick enough and making the correct decision. These things will get better with more experience for Padron.
