New Major? - Texas Hold 'Em

Postby PonySoprano » Sat May 29, 2004 12:47 am

There has been a lot of talk on this board about the need to add more courses and degree programs that would appeal to student-athletes.

Based on David Williams' run to a #2 finish at the World Series of Poker, I would suggest that SMU start a degree program in Texas Hold 'Em Poker. David Williams could hold the endowed chair of the department, and I would be happy to serve as a professor in the department.

The degree would require 54 hours of poker specific classes, in addition to pre-requisites (in math, economics, and statistics).

The course of study in this degree program would look something like this:
POK 1301 Probability
POK 1302 Odds, Pot Odds and Implied Odds
POK 1303 Poker Vocabulary
POK 2301 Ranking Pre-Flop Hands
POK 2302 Position Play
POK 2303 Early Position Strategy
POK 2304 Late Position Strategy
POK 3301 Strategy before the Flop
POK 3302 "Stealing" the Blinds
POK 3303 Slowplaying and Check-Raising
POK 3304 Folding Big Pots
POK 3305 Raising
POK 3306 The "Free" Card
POK 4301 Bluffing and Inducing Bluffs
POK 4302 Heads-Up Play vs. Multiple Players
POK 4303 Online Poker vs. Casino Poker
POK 4304 Using Tells to Read Hands
POK 4305 Reading Hands by the way a Player Plays his hands

Upon completion of this course of study, the student would be awarded with a B.A. in Texas Hold 'Em.

Graduate Study would include a trip to the WSOP. Students finishing in the money at the WSOP would earn an M.A. in Texas Hold 'Em.
