SMU Places Second in Annual WAC Commissioner's Cup
Rice Takes Home This Year's Award

For Immediate Release
Tuesday, June 1, 2004

Denver, Colo. - The Western Athletic Conference announced the winner of its annual Commissioner’s Cup with this year’s honor going to Rice University with 100.5 points. The Owls led all WAC teams by taking home four conference titles, including men’s tennis, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field and baseball. In second was 2003’s winner SMU who tallied 83 points, while in third was Tulsa with 80.5. The WAC awards its Commissioner’s Cup to the school that performs the best in each of the conference’s 18 men’s and women ’s championships.

Points are awarded in order of finish, equal to the number of teams which participate in each sport. Regular season standings are used for football, baseball and softball, while ties in tournaments are broken by using regular season conference winning percentage, if applicable.

Along with the four conference titles Rice took home this year, the Lady Owls took second in basketball and soccer, and grabbed third in cross country. Rice’s men’s basketball team tied with Boise State for third. Rice finished second a year ago with 91 points to last year’s winner SMU, who tallied 96.

In second this year is SMU who grabbed three WAC titles en route to 83 points. The Mustangs won the women’s soccer and swimming and diving titles, while the men brought home the WAC golf trophy. SMU was also helped by a second-place finish in women’s tennis and a third in women’s golf.
