[quote="Sam I Am"]Since things have been rather quiet on this board lately, I thought I would stir up the mean green by pointing out that Idaho has joined the WAC and UNT hasn't.
............................................................................................

Granted, Sam I Am, doesn't take much to stir us up and we sometimes like the banter it produces quite frankly, but I defer to Charleston Pony in his post and agree that geographically we have made the right move. The non BCS is still too unstable for anyone to unpack all their bags.

IMHO, these are the 4 things a non BCS school must do football/program-wise:

(1) Win more games than it loses...

(2) Get as many regional (or national) games televised as possible; even local TV game productions such as the 1990 SMU/UNT game and even with that game on "live" TV their still being SRO at Fouts Field (before expansion).

(3) Go to bowl games as often as possible; one cannot believe what that does for recruiting and alumnus donations.

(4) Keep facility improvement and additions toward the top of your athletic department's priority lists.

mean green didn't take the bait

Pooh, everyone is being so sensible this summer that "spirit" must be on vacation. It is sure slow right now, unless you love to hate the Lakers in the NBA finals. But the football magazines are sure to be on the shelves soon if not already, then we can dish about the lousy ratings we've gotten.

You fellas need to drop TCU in all sports, from football to tiddley-winks, forthwith. So must the rest of C-USA.
Have some pride.

Replace them with UNT if you like local games.

Wow, I can't believe I am agreeing with you - but I think we should drop them like a hot potatoe. They are not figuring that into their costs. Replace with UNT, get a win in football, and increase the gate probably.

While part of me likes the idea of dropping the Frogs like a bad date, they are our technical rivals and we should try and keep as many traditions alive as possible, even if it means playing the purple toads.

I hate them so much I want to drop them. Trouble is, we can't beat them if we drop them. And I want to beat them.

Keep the old SWC rivalries

Postby Sam I Am » Wed Jun 09, 2004 5:32 pm

One of the attractions of playing in the C-USA is keeping games with old SWC rivals. Hence, playing TCU makes sense too. The more you hate them, the better the interest in the series. Which is why a one-sided rivalry with UNT only makes sense in Denton, not Dallas.

The reason for you NOT to play them is for C-USA. I realize you will get short-term benefit from playing them. Let them scrounge for Texas opponents. TCU screwed C-USA over bigtime. Sometimes ya gotta take one for the team.

Get a win from UNT? I am trying to remember the scores between a common opponent SMU and UNT shared last Fall, namely, uh, Baylor?

SMU is looked upon in a completely different light from most UNT'ers since you are no longer in the now defunct SWC. The SWC days were when we really wanted to tee it up with your school; but now days, it's a take it or leave it attitude with us and that is no smack board retoric either.

All this post-SWC attitude from many UNT'ers probably has something to do about SMU blackballing our school every chance you get. This time around over a rinky dink little public school in BF Louisiana with a lame excuse from your president that most everyone in the Metroplex who followed this story were rolling their eyes back in disbelief. Many from various corners of the Metroplex lost respect for your president and school over that believe it or not. Even many TCU'ers are now saying UNT should have been the Metroplex CUSA entry over SMU based on what they have seen with our program (and what they are seeing now).

Yet, the continued blackballing of UNT by SMU seems to be the only way your school thinks it can slow down our momentum, our boom growth (you know, all those, uh, "commuters" filling our dorms which we cannot build fast enough as well as filling all campus-adjacent apartment complexes?), our athletic facility building plans (which have already begun) that will culminate with an olympic style village on almost 200 acres of prime interstate real estate which will include a new football stadium. etc, etc, etc, etc, etc,

So do we hold our breath for a football schedule with SMU? Let me answer that question by asking this one: "Does TCU see it necessary to be in a league with SMU?" So I just suppose UNT will be just fine, too.

I am sure UNT is growing - the bottom of the pyramid is always bigger then the top. Lowest common denominator growth is hardly worth mentioning.

And thats right - I said a win over UNT would be one of the benefits of playing you - it would be an easy one, at that. You are one of the only programs I could say that about. My post said play you, not black ball you, so why the fillibuster? - we need to get our out of conference schedule a little easier so I am all for it.

And this the kind of response UNT or most public university alums would expect from those who attended a private university. Be shocked if we heard different except for the fact that you do have a few enlightened souls on this board who don't feel that way.

QUESTION: Do you really think SMU could beat UNT this Fall based on Baylor who was our common opponent last year and that the Mean Green will probably have Darrell Dickey's best team to date in 2004? Be serious because I am.

A DISTINCT TREND OF WHEN SMU WILL SCHEDULE UNT IN FOOTBALL:

Of course, in the modern era of NCAA football (1950 to the present) we know SMU did not schedule UNT when your program was in down mode and ours in momentum-mode with that really beginning in the mid 1950's. This the time when UNT integrated Texas public universities and SMU would not play an Abner Haynes-led Mean Green football team, ie, a UNT team that went to a Sun Bowl.

On the other hand, your school would schedule UNT in the Ron (Slick) Meyer days of the late 1970's into the Bobby Collin$ led Mustang program of the 1980's when $MU had a few distinct advantages over a fully amateur UNT football program. Sorry, just doing the Howard Cosell thing here.

I see no upside in scheduling UNT. If they got lucky and beat us, we'd never hear the end of it. If we beat them, no one would think anything of it. Let them play ULL, MTSU, UAL, TSU, and the other schools in the Sun Belt. They can be the biggest fish in that pond and brag about being the biggest fish in that pond. They were offered a chance to move up to the WAC and said no. They cited economics, but I suspect that they did not want to be shown up by Boise, Fresno, Nevada, Hawaii. and worst of all by Louisiana Tech.

Man, you really need to see a professional about your delusional paranoia. Frankly, your whining has become so tiresome I'd like to see this forum blackball you.

I've wanted to play UNT since Matt Simon's Safeway challenge. It would be a chance to start another metroplex rivalry, and more importantly give SMU a chance for a win.

Oh yea - I remember the uproar this caused in the Metroplex. You couldn't go anywhere without hearing people talk about how UNT was getting snubbed by SMU. Easy on the delusions of granduer, Napoleon.

Are you serious?? "Many. . . lost respect for your school and president" - who the hell are you talking about? Maybe the random jack-ass on the Ticket?

And at the end of the day, what does it matter? UTEP got the invite, a big reason being (in my opinion) that they can potentially bring the Sun Bowl to the table as a CUSA tie-in.
