Next year, the roster loads up and we're gonna watch crap Dement ball again. Talent to compete for league titles, no execution.

I'll take crap Dement ball over Doh ball anytime. Crap ball is CUSA basketball.
You don't have to be that good to compete in CUSA. That should tell you how bad this program is.

I'll take Dement over Doh any day too, but none of it amounts to anything. This program needs a strong strategist and Xs and Os coach. I agree, we should be able to compete in CUSA easily. We have the talent starting next year, but like Dement, Doh will never do anything w/a good roster.

PonyDoh- why can't we have both? It is my understanding that the CC pays for JJ. That should not effect getting rid of this coach who is a bball cancer. Please provide facts not rumor. Thanks.
I am also suprised/disappointed that some of the former bball stars have not stepped up to do something to correct this program. Where is their pride in their school and their sport?

PonyDoh,
Why are you so certain our new coach next year will not be a solid X and O guy? If our roster is gonna be as solid as everyone seems to think, why wouldn't a young, bright coach want to come in here and make a name for himself?

Isn't doh getting paid a lot more the previous bball coaches? How does our bball salary line up with other cusa salaries?

Who is paying the buy-out? Certainly isn't cash coming through the box office or AD, which is bleeding out. That would be a booster buy-out, and we're tapping that well pretty heavy right now. Also, who is paying the new coach & his staff, all while June gets $2.75 per?

I'm not sure what you mean. I believe we need a strong X & O coach, and that the roster is a selling point. Obviously, we have to recruit better, but we haven't been X & O strong in forever. I like the program model Doh has right now, including systems if executed properly, but he's not X & O strong.

PonyDoh- I am curious who the bball boosters are that we are 'tapping out'. I am not aware that any of the bball greats have done anything to support the bball program. You are far more connected than most of us so I would think you would have a good handle on this. What have the Max Williams, John Koncaks et al done for the program? I am curious. Thanks

The issue isn't whether the salary is competitive, its that its hard to buy out, and still have money for a new coach/staff. A few of our biggest hoops boosters have Dohs back, and our football guys are spread out

I'm was speaking of our core athletic boosters in general, not just hoops boosters or profile basketball alumni. Anyway, I wouldn't be comfortable commenting on any individual, and what they choose to do w/their money, on a public message board. I'm just relaying what I hear, and in this case, several of our biggest hoops boosters seem to have Dohs back still. Also, the buyout, and resulting hiring money, is going to prove tough to come by,

Lets just be perfectly real here....Doherty is NOT going anywhere and let it rest. He will be here through his last contract year next year ( 2011) and with this monumental highly ranked signing class, he has secured his spot through the end of next year....period...end of story.
PonyDoh is correct, the powers that be with the $$ are on Coach Dohs side and are Dohs friends and will allow him to complete his mission through the end of next year, per his contract!
Lets just watch the ride....it will be painful at times, but talent alone can make a coach look brilliant in 2011....he probably won't even have his top 3 recruits this year because of NCAA bureaucracy.
Wasted energy at this time worrying about getting rid of Doh.
The Max Williams and Koncacks will be on board with additional $$ as SMU becomes more successful...they won't circumvent Dohs current efforts.

Exactly. I guess people are just now focusing on bball. If you had been paying attention the past few months, Doh seemed to have locked up job security as he put together his 2011 class. Especially, IMO, now that he nabbed a DISD recruit.
That, and the fact there isn't any buyout $$ makes it pretty certain Doh isn't going anywhere.

OK, fair enough but my concern is Orsini gives DOH another extension even after another dismal year. After all, there was some sort of clause in the original contract where DOH got a 2 year extension even with his past performance. Let him run out his current contract and get rid of him. I suspect next years excuses are that this great class he recruited is too young and inexperienced, needs more time. Therefore the cycle continues.

Somewhere along the line people -- including those in the cash-strapped SMU athletic department -- are going to have to STOP using the richness of the buyout for Doherty and do what's best for the program.

Dwindling attendance, mounting ding dong losses and zip fan interest has reached a point to where a presumed a terrible record will be the reason Doherty gets canned. IMO, anything short of 20 wins with this schedule, is a fireable offense. He set up this schedule so he could get there. If he doesn't, then he pays for it.

Yes, I put the Handel's Messiah link on there with the kids committing business. But really, there needs to be some accountability for what has transpired here.

I will not accept that this year should be counted as a write-off. That's a cop out. He built the program in his image. He's responsible for what happens.

Oh, and with the eligibility stuff surrounding these recruits, you get what you deserve when you sign overseas kids where the waters are constantly murkey.

I'm sorry this is happening to Smith and folks may feel like he's getting the shaft, but that's the risk Doherty ran when he signed him.

It stinks too because you would like to see what these kids can do and we don't if and when we'll get them in the lineup.

The Doherty era after 5 years speaks for itself.
