Bennett On TXCNCoach Bennett will be a guest on tonight's (6/22) Ford Sports Talk at 6 p.m. on TXCN. He'll talk about the 2004 season with host Brady Tinker, so be sure to tune in!
Nah, you can only get it in Austin if you have digital cable.
It's replayed tonight at 11:35 p.m. Ought to be interesting to hear what he says.
I didn't get home from work in time to see it. What did Coach have to say? Someone give an update please!
Let's put it this way. My stepdaughter, an LSU freshman, is taking "Biology for the non-science major." TXCN's segment could have been called "SMU Football for the non-SMU fan." While I'm sure Bennett & the program appreciate the exposure, anyone with even a casual interest in SMU would've been underwhelmed and not learned anything new by the segment. The one call taken from the 'hotline' asked how Bennett recruits post-dp, esp. since the SWC is no more. The best part was probably the host's stated dislike for TCU and his desire for SMU to beat the froggies.
actually the caller, Mr Potato Head(I'm not making it up) who claimed to be an alumus of a former SWC school asked a very pertinent question: what slice of the recruiting market has SMU been able to get into school since the DP. Bennett answered a totally different question responding that since the breakup of the SWC and the move West SMU has lost its traditional recruiting base----totally false rationale for our ineptitude----we may not be as competitive as we were in the 1980s in recruiting but that is a result of the strength of the Big 12 schools, the inability to compete on an even basis academically for student athletes, and the lack of commitment from the University and has little to do with merely the fact that we were in the WAC. TCU has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they could field a BETTER, more COMPETITIVE team even after the break-up of the SWC. Anybody making that claim better be able to discuss why we also haven't been able to compete against schools we formerly considered pansies-(list the CUSA WEST here minus UH). Each of these schools has faced the same problems as SMU or worse. TCU and Tulane have competed for national prominence, TCU, Tulane, Houston and UTEP have all won or shared a cha, pionship, TCU, Tulane, Houston, UTEP, Tulsa have all gone to bowl games, and Rice is more competitive than they have been in 40 years. Next excuse.
This is old news Stallion. I think Bennett was trying not to point fingers at the administration. Of course before Bennett got here we didn't compete because of the old Pye rules that you have reminded us about every other week. We have reversed many of those rules and seem to be at least getting better players than before Bennett at least according to sources you cite such as Rivals. I think the difference in our self-imposed rules really showed itself after the SWC break-up because at least we got some recruits who wanted to play in the SWC and were willing to put up with our silly rules. Bennett was partially correct that once we moved to the WAC, recruits were not willing to wait to see if they were going to be accepted before getting an offer when they already had offers from say UTEP, TCU and Tulsa. That left the dregs and the inexcusable records inside the WAC.
Re:
OK, so Brady Tinkerbell immediately becomes my favorite TV guy out there. Anyone who openly roots against the little froggies should have a national audience.
Tinker came down pretty [deleted] the Froggies, actually. Kind of funny, because he said they were ducking us, and some other stuff, and that he can't wait for the September 11 game.
He kind of has to be vague/generic when talking SMU football, because it's such a niche audience. If they start breaking down the 2-deep roster, about 4 people might keep watching. Bennett was pretty funny. Made a crack how with so many freshmen starting last year, we're fielding a JV team this year.
