They sign a LOI to play for the school, not the coach
Unfortunately, many sign to play for a specific coach.

I know what they do. I am stating what the LOI says.

I think there is an out in the LOI if there is a coaching change (see Kentucky/Memphis). I would think that the optimum idea is to make Doh assistant A.D. in charge of basketball marketing (heaven knows we don't know how to market the sport). And then hire a credible basketball coach. Doh is here for another year so these kids won't walk from their LOI's to wherever he ends up (UALR?, Paul Quinn?). But clearly, DBE is correct. This not a Division 1 basketball team. In fact, they probably would lose to some good high school teams.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

there is no exception from Letter of Intent when Coaches leave. Lately, it has become fashionable for some recruits to force an out by bitchin' and complainin" but there is no exception(sometimes it is unfair to a player if the new coach employs an entirely different offense for example-in such cases there is often a mutual parting of the ways)

Correct me if I am wrong, and I could be if rules have changed, but I do not think that firing a coach let's the kids out of their LOI. If they leave they sit out or move down. There are execptions I have seen where schools could release the kid from the LOI but I do not see why we would be obligated to if we did not want to. I realize there could be releases for PR purposes but again, I do not think firing a coach gives an automatic release of an LOI.

I would think that if Doherty was fired and any of the current LOI signees you guys have locked down wanted out of the letter... It would be a terrible idea to try and force them into staying.
As tough as it has been for you guys to sign Dallas kids, if you shackle them to a team they no longer want to play for (hypothetically, assuming they signed primarily to play for Doherty), the negative PR would be devastating. Remember what you were all saying a few weeks and months ago about how it took a long time to get back on local radar after the Tubbs situation. Five years later, you finally bring in a solid class heavy on local kids.
If they did want to back out and the program "punished" them by refusing to let them out of the LOIs... Put at least another 5 year block on landing local kids, if not longer.

Just have a hire ready and in place. You don't let the kids out until they meet w/the new coach on campus etc. Its par for the course these days. Chances are, if you get the right guy, he re-energizes a few of them, and we're good. Happened at Rutgers last year

No problem changing coaches, but Turner isn't going for BCG, I'd doubt.

Maybe SMU can save on the expense of turning on the lights in Moody for mens games. Just let the few boo$ter friends sit courtside in the Crum practice gym for games. At the end of the Doh era, that's all that will attend the games. You can have a boosters meeting in a phone booth. (remember phone booths?) I am disappointed that I have tickets for 18 remaining home games...

Yep, and if they don't want to play for him, let them go.

It's like the entirety of the bball program is stuck in Groundhog Day. Doh ripping the players for being soft, people calling for Doh's head, losing to another team we haven't heard of before...
