a couple real headscratchers

Postby Hoop Fan » Sat Nov 20, 2010 11:05 pm

ok, we won, so all is well, but why do we keep giving opponents the ball AND the wind to start the second half? Can someone splain it to me? Having the wind in the fourth quarter is nice, but you are letting the other team maximize their time of possession with the wind. We are putting a tremendous amount of pressure on our defense and special teams by doing that. And please, if Sada can't kickoff further than the 20 into the wind, just kick it out bounds for godsake. I'd rather give it to them at the 35 with no runback, than watch them run to midfield. One more thing, did our coaches REALLY think Marshall was going to punt to us with 8 minutes left and down 2 tds? How were we not expecting a fake there? Better tighten it up or we won't win on the road at ECU in unfriendly territory.

How about putting our Kick defense on the field with Marshall down 14 with 8 minutes left. There was no way in Hell Marshall was going to punt that ball. A very obvious fake situation.

It didn't look like their punter even lined up normally...very shallow and obviously a fake

The wind and the ball issue baffled me. 24 points up, go for the kill. They can have the wind in the 4th and it would not matter.

we did the same thing against TCU and it cost us the chance to keep the game close into the fourth quarter. When Curley took that short kickoff to the house early in the third quarter, it was curtains.

The fake punt was reaction was ridiculous. My only suspicion was that we were looking for the traditional up the middle business and that reverse just caught everybody off guard. We had no one accounting for that side of the field.

It was a nice play.

Now, I'm blanking...did they score their last TD on that or was that the one where we held them at the 8? If it's the latter guess it was a blessing to have your punt returner make the tackle and save a possible TD.

SMU didn't have one defender on that side of the fake punt.

we had a kid behind us ...maybe he was about 12 yrs old..yell - "this will be a fake, watch the fake" - sure enough they make 20 yards. Baffling coverage.

If my 3 year old was actually tall enough to have seen over the people in front of us, even she would have said "watch for the fake". Ridiculous yes, but we won, so HE!! YES.

I was not watching the fake punt close enough on the small image on my computer to see this, but the radio announcers said that we were watching for the fake and when the kicker received the ball he started right and our defense quickly went right as well and then the kicker handed off on the reverse and we were not fast enough to catch the runner. Mcknight should of had at least one player stay home on the backside regardless of where the runner went. I have been very disappointed with our special teams play this year. Compared to the last two years it has been abysmal. I love Mcknight's enthusiasm, but I don't think he is the right coach for special teams.

Ha! I'm pretty sure "McKnight" has someone to contain on the backside. Players don't always execute the way the coaches draw it up.
