Nov. 21, 2010
SAN ANTONIO (SMU) --- Behind a career-high 23-point performance from senior Raquel Christian, the SMU women's basketball team defeated UTSA, 69-47, on Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
"I'm proud of the way our team performed today," SMU head coach Rhonda Rompola said. "We were able to play several freshmen during the game that will benefit us down the road. While there was some sloppy play at times, overall I'm pleased with our performance."
The Mustangs (1-2) turned in their best shooting performance of the season, sinking 24 of 45 attempts (53.3%). Christian, who came off the bench, led the Mustangs going 9 for 15 from the field. The senior guard hit a career-high five three-pointers on only six attempts.
Post Christine Elliott turned in a superb performance for the Mustangs scoring 16 points and nine rebounds. The junior was a near-perfect 6 of 7 from the field. Senior Delisha Wills also turned in a superb performance for SMU, pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds and adding in four assists.
"Christine Elliott and Delisha Wills have both been working on the high-low game together in practice and it showed today," said Rompola.
Defensively the Mustangs were able to hold the Roadrunners (2-2) to a season-best 23.8 shooting percentage. Elliott led the Mustangs with two blocks from the post. Junior Samantha Mahnesmith constantly pressured the ball handler and led SMU with two steals.
With Alisha Filmore out of the game with an injury, freshman Krystal Johnson received the start, which is the first of her career. Johnson posted a game-high five assists and added in three points.
The Mustangs return home next weekend to host the Hoops for the Cure tournament at Moody Coliseum. The Ponies open with a game against Arkansas State at 7 p.m. on Friday night and faces off with Georgia Southern/Akron on Saturday. For ticket information, call 214-SMU-GAME (214-768-4263).
