Chris Hall (Wardog) is WEIGHING his options!

Postby Ponymon » Fri Jul 02, 2004 9:33 am

:o Wardog has offers from Florida, Iowa, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Mississippi State, Iowa State, UTEP, Vanderbilt, SMU, and Louisiana-Monroe. He now has 4 schools that he wants to consider :? including Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Iowa, and Florida. He also has an interest in Texas, but they haven't offered. Wardog's strength has suffered because of a broken collarbone, but he says that he is now 100%.
It is good for him to look around, but I sure hope he stays with us!

This can NOT happen! Chris has had SMU in his blood ever since Zach signed with the Ponies, and he needs to remain a (future) Mustang. The Irving-to-SMU pipeline must continue to flow.

Look, he's (not even) a high school senior. It's normal to look a little. He committed after what, his sophomore year? That's pretty young to make such a decision.

But there were reasons he committed when he did, which may have included:
- His brother's at SMU, and they're close. It's natural that they should want to play together.
- SMU is a great school, where he can get a great education.
- Vincent Chase, a longtime family friend, already was showing serious interest in SMU, and committed shortly thereafter.
- SMU's coaching staff includes two brothers of his current head coach.
- SMU has amazingly attractive .... "scenery".
- It's close to his home, so all his friends and family can come see him (and Zach, and his friends Bobby and Vincent Chase, as well as Lucky DeLay) play.
- There's good reason to believe more Irving talent is headed to SMU.

I don't know which or how many of these factors weighed into his decision. But at least some of them surely helped him make his decision. And how many of those factors no longer are true? ZERO.

Remember, Vincent Chase looked around, too, and he stayed true to his word. Maybe Vincent needs to sit down with Chris and go over his checklist again. He seems like a bright guy, and will realize what's important to him, and that SMU remains the only choice he could make.

If that doesn't work, Zach needs to mess with Chris's food at the family dinner table. Whatever it takes. :D

when you go after top players, you have to expect they will have lots of offers. Vincent Chase certainly had lots of options last year, but chose to stay home and play with his buddies. I'm sure Chris was disappointed that Marcus Shavers didn't end up interested in SMU and he should take a look around. After all, these guys are deciding where they want to spend the next 4-5 years of their lives. I'd like to see SMU sign more and more guys who have offers from 10-15 top programs. Until that happens regularly, we aren't likely to compete with other top 25 programs.

I'm GLAD he's had offers from bigtime schools like these, and it's normal for a guy his age to consider his choices. But remember, when Vincent Chase committed to SMU last year, his coach, Jim Bennett, told him that if he was going to commit - to SMU or anywhere else - that he had to be sure, that it wasn't fair to a college coach to commit and then back out. Vincent also listened, I gather, when other schools called, but he held true to his word. It seems that the Chase brothers are young men of very high character, and I gather Zach Hall is the same way. Why should we assume Chris is any different from his brother? I'm sure Jim Bennett gave him the "don't commit unless you're really going to sign" speech before he announced his commitment. If he's anything like his brother, Chris must also be a smart guy, and will realize that SMU is a terrific school, close to home, presents a lot of post-college opportunities and gives him the unique chance to play football with his brother and with his friends, the Chase brothers and Lucky DeLay. I'm betting he still signs with us in February.

Have faith - Coach Bennett and his staff have shown that if there's one thing they can do and do well, it's recruit. Between the coaches and Zach and the rest of the Irving boys, I have to believe Chris will keep it in the family and stay with his commitment.
