Discussion: If you had to pick......one Mustang from the school's football past to be on this year's roster, who would you pick and what would be your reason(s)? My choice: Doak Walker. He could do almost all of it!

Eric Dickerson.
If the pick was only on the defensive side, I'd probably take Michael Carter. I pay close attention to line play when watching a game and I'd be psyched to see a big, fast, athletic DT/NT in an SMU uniform.
There are so many great ones: The Great Doak, Michael Carter, Russell Carter, Louie Kelcher, Forrest Gregg, Ron Morris, Wes Hopkins, etc., but as Stallion said, Eric The Great is the biggest difference maker in SMU history. He was simply without peer. You could even start a debate about his status as perhaps the most gifted college RB ever. He's got to be the guy.
Re:No argument from MM1965 about ED's 'greatness'...however, if this is the case: Stallion please explain the reason(s) that ED didn't win the Heisman Trophy. IMO he *should* have received it!
Re:
I don't disagree with your pick, but as far as being the biggest difference maker...what would the teams back in the late 40's and early 50's really have been with out Doak Walker? Obviously the game today is much different then what it was then and I'm not sure a Doak clone today would have the same impact, but how many different positions did Doak play? All in all, given the demands of todays game I would agree that Eric would be the one to have back, just not sure he was really the biggest difference maker in SMU history.
Did you know that Dickerson and James had TWO O-lines. One played the 1st and 3rd and the other played the 2nd and 4th.
Reality - Big MEN. We had linemen from all over and more waiting to play the next year. ED would not have the same impact today. Give me Kelcher, Gregg, Stanland, O'Meara and the like. Oh, I think Micheal Carter would help BIG TIME. While we are at it... How about Jerry Ball too. Mustang Militia: Fight the good fight"
That's who I was thinking about: Jerry Ball. Once he grew from a FB into a DT, he was awfully tough to move.
The reason Dickerson didn't win the Heisman was because he was only on the field for about 45% of SMU's snaps-splitting time with James and on the bench in 4th Q when we were far ahead. But he averaged 7.0 yards per carry his senior year while the most overrated RB in the country Hershell Walker who won the Heisman averaged only 4.8 per carry.
