Re: bowling for dollarsAlthough some projections had us in the beef bowl, it is usually used for an east division team for lesser travel costs.

Re: bowling for dollarsOne would think the raw economic numbers play a role in this year’s game. We have a better chance of attracting a crowd on the mainland (and especially Dallas) than Hawai’i.
Also, a better chance for Students to see the game if in Dallas. Not much of a trip for the kids as I think most have seen Dallas before. No doubt the JJ vs. UH scenario is attractive from a marketing view but not so much for the SMU fans, students and pocketbook. Of course if we win Saturday this is all mute.

Re: bowling for dollarsIf we win Saturday, I would prefer to play an SEC team in the Liberty Bowl, but what are the chances the Liberty Bowl and Armed Forces Bowl work out a swap and have us play in Dallas? I can't imagine the Liberty Bowl is psyched about having ~5k SMU fans make the trip (may be generous), while the other school brings 40k+ fans.
Conversely, I think the Armed Forces Bowl would much rather have the host school play in the game as opposed to ~4k Tulsa fans making the trip to Dallas. I think the Liberty Bowl would prefer an ECU or UCF with their public school sized fan bases. Again, not the scenario I want, but it really is the bowl's choice and they are not mandated to take the CUSA winner, especially when they have the opportunity to spin us off to our "home" bowl and make it look like they are doing us a favor. Should we make it to the Liberty Bowl, it really is make or break it time for SMU's fan base. The attendance we bring to that bowl will stay with us for all future bowl selections and will either label us as a serious contender or another small private school pretending. It will also weigh heavily should we ever make to a BCS Bowl opportunity. Time to put up or shut up Mustang Fans, it's driveable so no excuses. #NewLobCity
Re: bowling for dollars
I would think the crowd is nearly irrelevant. The question is which bowl attracts the most tv viewers. Hawaii is most probably that bowl.
Re: bowling for dollarsWhen I went to the LB with UcF I think they had about 12000 fans not to bad they played Mississippi State and lost. I will not go back to that frozen land in Dec
Re: bowling for dollars
Yeah, since it's not about our fans, let's be a "cyber-team." Play each week wherever ESPN says. No home games. Our "fans" will be internet-hits and SportsCenter ratings. Sold-out bowl games at Ford or 20,000 SMU fans at Memphis would take back seats to predicted TV viewership. (BTW, last year's Hawaii Bowl rating was no where near second to the BCS championship, as predicted by "some." Go Mustangs! BEAT UCF!
Re: bowling for dollarsI hear you. But ESPN makes the rules.
