Quarterbacks
As I see it, here are the strengths and weaknesses:
McCown: Strongest, most accurate arm, best mobility on team. Instincts allow him to scramble and make plays when flushed from the pocket. Needs to improve reading a defense while under center and making necessary adjustments.
Luker: Impeccable mechanics. Against a team who gets little to no pass rush, Luker could simply dissect a defense. Smart QB who understands the game, and who will add arm strength with physical maturity. Barring a sudden growth spurt, can't change lack of height, but will be solid QB -- perhaps as a backup -- with another year or two under his belt.
Blanton: From the little I saw of him during the spring, seems to have a strong arm and excellent size/frame. Needs experience to develop as a QB, but appears to have necessary physical tools. May get caught in a numbers game if Luker redshirts a year, then takes over for McCown while Cavan continues to recruit a QB each year.
Page: We'll see in August. But the stats and pedigree are there.
Your thoughts?

Re: Quarterbacks
I personally do not have that much faith in Josh McCown. I think he is certainly overrated. I am very curious to see what Blanton and Page will do next fall. I do not have that much faith in Kelan Luker, either!

Re: Quarterbacks
Actuslly, Coach Cavan is very high on Luker and on McCown. This isn't really an area of extreme need. (Look at the secondary)

I think McCown will have a better overall football career than the others.

Re: Quarterbacks
I bet he sets a new Pick 6/Fumble 6 record at SMU.

He did. Couldn't play at SMU but had a few years in the NFL??

This is what happens when there is little else to do but sit around and wait for Signing Day.

Oh well, it's better than getting on Wikipedia and seeing where it takes me; down the rabbit hole of information...

Re: Quarterbacks
for my money mcCown was better and more talented than any qb playing for us in the last 5 years. probly faster than padron and a better arm than any of em. and correct me if i'm wrong, we ran him off, didn't we? which coach did that?

Re: Quarterbacks
Yeah I'll correct you.He wasn't run off- He quit. He could have come back to fight it out against the great Kelan Luker but he ran off to Division 1AA. He had one of the worst years any SMU QB has ever had. His play would make McDerrmott look like Johnny Unitas. Not only did he turn the ball over he handed the other team about 6 TDs on interception/fumble returns. He richly deserved to be benched-I don't waste my time with SMU quitters who graduate from Sam Houston St.

Re: Quarterbacks
We had three somewhat talented QBs back then: Luker, McCown, and Page. Impressive. Too bad nothing came of them with SMU.

he had a miserable year but i thought a lot of it was because he had lousy protection and receivers and made a lot of throws while running for his life. if he was so bad, how come he's still in the nfl after all this time? he's not a starter but you don't hang around the nfl without ability. he had a lot of help being bad that year and i doubt he was running from kelan luker. i think he left because of a coaching change, didn't he?
